However, the continuous increase in transport fares has become a major challenge for many Delta State University (DELSU) students. As fuel prices rise and the cost of living increases, transportation has become more expensive, placing an additional financial burden on students who already struggle with tuition, accommodation, feeding, and other academic expenses.

In my opinion, the high cost of transportation is negatively affecting students’ academic performance, attendance, and overall well-being, and urgent action is needed to address the problem.

For many students, transportation is no longer just a daily necessity but a serious financial challenge. Those who live off campus spend a significant amount of money each day travelling to and from lectures. As transport fares continue to increase, many are forced to reduce their daily expenses by skipping meals, cutting back on study materials, or borrowing money from friends simply to get to school. This situation places unnecessary stress on students and makes university life even more difficult.

The high cost of transportation also affects students’ academic performance. Some students arrive late for lectures because they cannot afford transport fares on time or have to wait for cheaper means of transportation. Others miss important classes, practical sessions, tests, or group meetings because they lack transportation money. Frequent absenteeism reduces students’ understanding of course materials and can eventually affect their academic performance.

Another concern is the emotional and physical stress caused by transportation difficulties. Many students now choose to walk long distances to save money. While walking may reduce expenses, it often leaves students exhausted before lectures even begin, making it difficult to concentrate during class. The combination of financial pressure and physical stress can negatively affect students’ mental health and overall learning experience.

Although the increase in transport fares is largely linked to rising fuel prices and the country’s current economic challenges, students should not be left to bear the burden alone. The Delta State Government, university management, and transport operators should work together to find lasting solutions. Introducing affordable campus shuttle buses, regulating transport fares around the university environment, and improving road infrastructure would go a long way toward easing the financial pressure on students.

In conclusion, the high cost of transportation has become a major obstacle to the academic success and well-being of Delta State University, Abraka students. Every student deserves access to affordable and reliable transportation to attend lectures and participate fully in university life. Addressing this challenge will not only reduce students’ financial burden but also improve attendance, academic performance, and the overall quality of education. It is time for all relevant stakeholders to recognise this issue and take meaningful steps toward providing lasting solutions.

Iteme Rita is a 200-level student in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Delta State University, Abraka.

By Iteme Rita Transportation is an essential part of students’ daily lives, especially in a university town like Abraka, where many students commute from different parts of the community to attend lectures.
