It is the influence that friends or people within the same age group have on one another, often shaping the decisions they make. While peer pressure can sometimes encourage positive behaviour, I believe its negative effects are far more common and far more damaging. Too many young people make life-changing mistakes simply because they want to fit in or avoid being rejected by their peers.

In my opinion, one of the greatest dangers of peer pressure is that it causes people to act against their values and better judgment. Many teenagers and young adults know the difference between right and wrong, yet they still engage in harmful activities because they fear being mocked, isolated, or labelled as “uncool.” The desire to belong can be so powerful that it overshadows the ability to make responsible decisions.

Across many communities, peer pressure has contributed to problems such as drug abuse, smoking, cultism, examination malpractice, internet fraud, unhealthy relationships, alcohol abuse, stealing, and other forms of criminal or immoral behaviour. What often begins as an attempt to gain acceptance can gradually develop into habits that destroy education, careers, and even lives.

Many young people have experimented with smoking or drugs because they were persuaded by friends who claimed such behaviour was fashionable or a sign of maturity. Others have become involved in examination malpractice because they feared failing while their classmates cheated. Some have abandoned their dreams in pursuit of quick wealth after being influenced by peers who glorify shortcuts to success. Sadly, these decisions often end in disappointment, legal problems, addiction, or lifelong regret.

Peer pressure also affects relationships. Some young people change their personalities, values, or lifestyles simply to impress someone they admire or gain acceptance within a particular social circle. In doing so, they lose their identity and compromise the principles that once guided them. No friendship or relationship is worth sacrificing one’s character or future.

Despite these concerns, peer pressure is not always harmful. When surrounded by the right people, young individuals can be inspired to study harder, develop useful skills, pursue meaningful goals, and become responsible members of society. Positive friendships encourage discipline, hard work, respect, and personal growth. This demonstrates that the influence of peers depends largely on the kind of company one chooses to keep.

In my view, the solution begins with making wise choices about friendship. Young people should learn to think independently and have the confidence to say “no” when pressured into doing what is wrong. Parents, teachers, religious leaders, and community leaders also have a responsibility to guide and mentor young people, helping them build the confidence to resist negative influences.

Ultimately, peer pressure is a powerful force that can either build or destroy a person’s future. While it has the potential to encourage positive behaviour, its negative impact is more visible in today’s society. I believe every young person should carefully choose their friends, remain true to their values, and remember that true friends will never pressure them into making decisions they may later regret.

Gift Oshevire is a student of Journalism and Media Studies with a passion for writing on youth development, education, and social issues.

By Gift Oshevire Peer pressure is one of the most common challenges facing young people today.
