Some tenants said they were asked to pay the new rates immediately or risk eviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to affected residents, self-contained apartments that previously rented for about \u20a6180,000 per year now cost between \u20a6250,000 and \u20a6300,000, while one-bedroom apartments have also recorded significant increases. Many tenants described the sudden changes as unfair, especially in the face of the country&#8217;s rising cost of living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking to our correspondent, a civil servant living in Abraka said he was shocked to receive a notice demanding an additional \u20a680,000 on his annual rent with only a few weeks to make payment. He explained that the unexpected increase had disrupted his family&#8217;s budget and forced him to consider relocating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students of Delta State University have also complained that the rising cost of accommodation is making it increasingly difficult to continue their education. Some said they have been forced to share small apartments with several roommates, while others have moved to communities farther away from campus where rent is slightly lower despite the additional transportation costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some landlords defended the rent increases, arguing that inflation, higher maintenance costs, rising building material prices, and increased utility expenses have made it difficult to maintain previous rental rates. They maintained that property owners are also affected by the current economic situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Housing advocates have called on relevant government authorities to strengthen the enforcement of tenancy regulations and ensure that landlords follow due process before increasing rents. They also urged tenants to be aware of their legal rights and seek appropriate mediation whenever disputes arise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residents appealed to the Delta State Government and local authorities to introduce measures that will protect tenants from arbitrary rent increases while encouraging investment in affordable housing.
