Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) are no longer used solely for entertainment. They have become spaces where young people learn about political candidates, share opinions, and organise real-world civic action.

To understand this shift, our correspondent spoke with several young voters.

Chiamaka, a student of Delta State University, Abraka, said social media changed her perception of politics.

“I used to think politics was boring, but when I saw a TikTok video explaining how local elections work, I realised I had a say.”

Another young voter, Tolu, said social media has helped simplify complex political issues.

“I follow some activists on Instagram who break down issues like climate change and education in simple ways. That makes me feel like I’m part of a bigger movement.”

Many young people believe social media gives them opportunities to learn beyond what they hear through traditional media. Instead of waiting for debates or lengthy political speeches, they access short and easy-to-understand videos that stimulate their interest in governance.

Daniel, another respondent, said social media encouraged him to participate in elections.

“I didn’t know how important local elections were until I saw a video explaining them. Now, I’m planning to vote for the first time.”

Despite its advantages, respondents acknowledged that social media also presents challenges. The rapid spread of misinformation and unequal internet access continue to limit its effectiveness for some users.

Nevertheless, many believe that digital platforms have given young people a stronger voice in politics by helping them stay informed, express their opinions, and actively participate in democratic processes.

As young voices continue to grow louder online, observers believe social media will play an increasingly significant role in shaping democratic participation in the 21st century.

By Onajite Eghwrudje In today’s digital age, where smartphones have become part of everyday life, social media is transforming the way young people engage with politics.
