Increasingly, students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, are struggling to secure affordable accommodation as rental prices continue to soar across the university town, raising concerns about the impact on their academic and social well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Areas traditionally occupied by students, including Ekrejeta, Urhuoka, and Abraka Railway, have witnessed significant increases in rental costs ahead of and during the academic session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many students say the situation has forced them to share overcrowded rooms, settle for substandard accommodation, or rely on financial assistance from family members to meet housing expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I had to spend weeks searching for a place I could afford,”<\/em> said a student who requested anonymity. “The prices were far beyond my budget, and some landlords were demanding additional charges on top of the rent. I eventually settled for a place at Platinum after I became exhausted from searching.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ererhebue Juliet, a 100-Level Journalism student, said she currently lives with her sister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My sister is already a DELSU student, so when I gained admission, I moved in with her. We live in a bedsitter with an annual rent of \u20a6350,000,”<\/em> she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigations revealed that, in addition to annual rent, students are often required to pay caution fees, agency fees, legal fees, and utility charges, further increasing the financial burden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Landlords, however, attributed the increase to prevailing economic realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Lucky Emebradu, a landlord in Abraka, said rising maintenance costs and the high cost of building materials have made rent increases unavoidable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The cost of maintaining these buildings has gone up. We also face rising expenses, and the cost of building materials is extremely high, so increasing rent has become inevitable,”<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The accommodation challenge has persisted due to the widening gap between the growing student population and the limited number of available hostels and private accommodations within the host community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thousands of students compete for available rooms each academic session, giving landlords greater influence over rental prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The development has prompted calls for intervention from relevant authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responding to concerns over rising rental costs, DELSU management said efforts are underway to address accommodation shortages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, disclosed while receiving members of the DELSU Alumni National Fundraising Committee on March 5, 2026, that the university had secured intervention funds to construct a 1,000-bed hostel through a Central Bank intervention programme, alongside additional hostel projects through TETFund interventions and other arrangements aimed at easing accommodation challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although management has announced these initiatives, many students say they are yet to experience their impact and have urged the university to fast-track implementation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As DELSU continues to attract students from across the country, concerns remain over whether urgent steps will be taken to make accommodation more affordable and ensure that access to education is not hindered by rising housing costs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
