The management of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has intensified its campaign against extortion, sexual harassment, and other forms of misconduct following the dismissal of a staff member found guilty of exploiting students.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, disclosed this during a press briefing ahead of the university’s 18th Convocation Ceremony, describing the decision as part of the institution’s ongoing efforts to strengthen accountability, preserve academic integrity, and protect students from exploitation.

Professor Asagba said the university would not tolerate any act capable of bringing the institution into disrepute or undermining public confidence.

According to him, the dismissed staff member was sanctioned after investigations confirmed allegations of extortion involving students.

He emphasized that due process was followed before disciplinary action was taken.

The Vice Chancellor also disclosed that other allegations of misconduct involving staff members are currently under investigation.

He explained that disciplinary action would continue wherever credible evidence exists, stressing that every complaint received by the university is carefully investigated before any decision is reached.

Professor Asagba said the administration’s determination to eliminate unethical practices forms part of broader reforms aimed at promoting accountability, professionalism, and excellence in service delivery.

He reaffirmed that proven cases of extortion, sexual harassment, admission racketeering, and certificate fraud would attract appropriate sanctions, regardless of the status of those involved.

He encouraged students to report cases of extortion and misconduct through the appropriate university channels, assuring them that all genuine complaints would receive confidential and fair treatment.

The Vice Chancellor noted that universities have a responsibility not only to produce graduates but also to promote ethical values capable of shaping responsible citizens.

He added that maintaining discipline requires transparent procedures, credible evidence, and strict adherence to due process.

Professor Asagba maintained that the university would continue strengthening institutional oversight, reviewing policies, and improving internal monitoring to sustain public confidence in the institution.

He concluded by assuring members of the university community that DELSU remains committed to providing a safe, fair, and conducive learning environment where students can pursue their education free from intimidation, exploitation, and abuse.
