The dream of acquiring an education and building a better future is increasingly being overshadowed by the daily struggle to afford food, transportation, accommodation, and other basic necessities. As the cost of living continues to rise, student life is being reshaped in ways that threaten not only academic success but also the future of the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Education has always been regarded as a pathway to opportunity and social mobility. However, for many students, remaining in school has become a financial burden. Rising inflation, increasing transportation fares, soaring food prices, and the high cost of educational materials have turned what should be a period of learning and personal development into a constant fight for survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not long ago, modest allowances from parents or guardians could cover a student&#8217;s basic needs. Today, that is no longer the case. The cost of a simple meal has risen significantly, transportation expenses consume a large portion of students&#8217; budgets, and essential study materials have become increasingly unaffordable. For students from low-income families, these realities create barriers that can interrupt or even end their educational journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The economic hardship has also forced many students to look for alternative means of survival. Side businesses, part-time jobs, and freelance work have become common among undergraduates. While entrepreneurship and hard work should be encouraged, it is concerning that many students engage in these activities out of necessity rather than ambition. Trying to balance academic responsibilities with the need to earn a living often leads to stress, exhaustion, and poor academic performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accommodation presents another major challenge. Rising rent, increasing utility bills, and the growing cost of maintaining hostel facilities have placed additional pressure on students already struggling with other expenses. Some are forced to live in overcrowded conditions, while others travel long distances to campus in search of more affordable housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The effects of economic hardship extend beyond finances. The constant worry about paying school fees, buying textbooks, feeding adequately, and meeting daily expenses has taken a toll on students&#8217; mental and emotional well-being. Many live with anxiety and uncertainty, concerned not only about their own future but also about the financial difficulties facing their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite these challenges, Nigerian students continue to display remarkable resilience. Many have embraced entrepreneurship, acquired new skills, and found creative ways to support themselves while pursuing their education. Their determination is admirable, but resilience should not become a reason to overlook the hardships they face. Young people should not have to sacrifice their education or well-being simply to survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Government institutions, educational authorities, and society at large must recognise that investing in students is an investment in Nigeria&#8217;s future. More scholarships, affordable accommodation, improved student welfare programmes, and policies aimed at reducing the financial burden of education are necessary to ensure that no student is denied opportunities because of economic hardship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cost of survival should never outweigh the value of education. Nigerian students deserve an environment where they can focus on learning, innovation, and personal growth rather than worrying about their next meal or transportation fare. If the challenges confronting students are allowed to persist, the country risks losing the talents and potential of a generation that should be preparing to lead its future.
