Tensions have reached a boiling point at Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, after the Students’ Union Government (SUG) issued a stern 24-hour ultimatum to the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of several students arrested on campus grounds.

According to an official letter stamped as received by the Delta State Police Command on July 22, 2026, the incident occurred around 10:00 p.m. on the night of July 21.

Campus intelligence indicates that a group of undergraduates were rounded up without warrants or stated offenses and subsequently transferred to Asaba.

The arrests come at a critical time, as the university is preparing to commence its second semester examinations in less than two weeks.

In the official notice signed by SUG Executive President Amb. Barr. Comr. Kingsley Ovedje Dumuje and Secretary General Hon. Comr. Oliseyum Victory, the union condemned the police action as an arbitrary infringement on the students’ rights:”These arrests were conducted without the display of a warrant and, to the best of our knowledge, were executed under circumstances that suggest no immediate offense was committed… It raises a serious alarm regarding the safety of students and the protection of their rights to liberty.”

Threat Of Mass Protest

While acknowledging the duty of law enforcement to maintain public order, the SUG emphasized that random nocturnal arrests only serve to breach the peace and endanger the academic futures of students preparing for examinations.

The Executive Council warned that if the arrested students are not released unconditionally within 24 hours, the union will mobilize the entire student body for a historic action across the state.

“If our request is not acknowledged and resolved within the next 24 hours, the Students’ Union Government will have no option but to mobilize the student body for what would be the largest peaceful protest in the history of this state to demand justice and the protection of our educational rights.”

The official demand letter has been copied to key government and security institutions, including:

  • The Delta State Government and Department of State Services (DSS)

  • The Commissioner for Higher Education

  • The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) — National and Zonal Leadership

  • University Management

  • The General Public

As the 24-hour clock ticks down, the entire Abraka community remains on edge, awaiting an official response from the Delta State Police Command in Asaba.
