The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, on Saturday, July 4, 2026, organized a rally to officially commence the 2026 SUG Week celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rally, which began at 8:00 a.m.<\/strong> from the SUG Secretariat after the Postgraduate Hostel, attracted students from different faculties and departments as they marched across the campus to create awareness about the week-long activities and encourage active student participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event served as the official opening of the nine-day SUG Week celebration, which is designed to promote unity, leadership, student engagement, cultural diversity, sportsmanship, and social interaction among members of the university community. Students carrying banners and chanting solidarity songs moved around strategic areas of the campus to publicize the programme and invite other students to participate in the activities scheduled for the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To ensure the rally was peaceful and well coordinated, security personnel accompanied the procession throughout the exercise, maintaining order and ensuring the safety of participants. The university ambulance team was also on standby throughout the rally to provide immediate medical assistance in case of any emergency. Their presence contributed to the smooth and successful conduct of the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during the rally, the Director of Finance of the Students’ Union Government, Comrade Idudhe Orevaoghene Emma<\/strong>, a 500-level student of the Faculty of Pharmacy, said the rally was organized to demonstrate that students remain united despite the challenges facing the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to her, the Students’ Union Government exists to protect the interests of students and ensure that their voices are heard by the university management whenever important decisions affecting students are made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The purpose of today’s rally is to show that students are united and have a voice. The Students’ Union Government will always stand behind the students and continue to represent their interests,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emma explained that the rally also serves as a medium for passing important information to students and reminding them that education remains valuable despite the country’s current economic difficulties. She encouraged students not to focus solely on academics but to take advantage of leadership opportunities available on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She further advised students to know their elected leaders and understand the responsibilities of the Students’ Union Government. According to her, student leaders represent the interests of students during meetings with the university management, where important decisions concerning student welfare are discussed. She urged students to participate actively in student leadership, develop positive values, and contribute meaningfully to the growth of the university community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also speaking, the President of the Students’ Union Government, Comrade Kingsley O. Dumeje<\/strong>, a 400-level student of the Department of Educational Management Foundation, described SUG Week as a celebration dedicated to every student of Delta State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the annual celebration provides opportunities for students to participate in cultural displays, sporting competitions, entertainment programmes, and other social activities that strengthen relationships among students, staff, management, and members of the host community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Dumeje, SUG Week is more than a period of celebration; it is an opportunity for students from different backgrounds and faculties to interact, build friendships, and become more involved in campus life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that the rally also creates awareness among students and residents of Abraka about the activities planned for the week while encouraging students to take active roles in the affairs of the Students’ Union Government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The rally informs not only students but also members of the Abraka community about what the Students’ Union Government is doing. It is an opportunity to bring everyone together and encourage greater participation in campus activities,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many students who participated in the rally expressed enthusiasm about the event and looked forward to taking part in the various programmes scheduled for the nine-day celebration. The rally ended peacefully under the supervision of security personnel, while the university ambulance team remained on standby until the exercise concluded, marking the successful commencement of the 2026 DELSU SUG Week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
