Girls should change their sanitary pads regularly, wash properly with clean water, and avoid using unclean materials during their periods,” she said.

She also encouraged parents, schools, healthcare workers, and government agencies to intensify menstrual health education and make sanitary products more affordable for students.

Sharing her experience, Akpobome Eseoghene Miracle, a 200-level Biochemistry student, said menstrual hygiene means taking proper care of oneself during menstruation by using clean sanitary products, changing them regularly, maintaining personal hygiene, and staying healthy and comfortable.

She explained that menstrual hygiene is important because it helps prevent infections, keeps girls and women comfortable and confident, and allows them to carry out their daily activities without unnecessary discomfort.

Speaking on the challenges female students face, Miracle identified the high cost of sanitary pads, lack of access to clean water and toilets, inadequate disposal facilities, menstrual pain, and the stigma surrounding menstruation as major obstacles.

“I think some students feel comfortable discussing menstruation, but many do not because of embarrassment, cultural beliefs, fear of being judged, or the stigma surrounding periods,” she said.

She added that male students also have an important role to play by respecting girls and women, avoiding teasing, learning about menstrual health, sharing accurate information, and supporting campaigns that promote access to menstrual hygiene products.

Another student, Okoro Marvelous Okpowhuku, a 400-level Health and Safety Education student, also emphasized the importance of proper menstrual hygiene. She described it as maintaining cleanliness and proper care during menstruation to protect health and prevent infections.

Okoro disclosed that she first learned about menstruation and menstrual hygiene while in secondary school, stressing that early education helps girls understand their bodies and prepare for menstruation.

According to her, maintaining good menstrual hygiene keeps the body healthy and reduces the risk of health problems during menstruation. Although she said she had not noticed many misconceptions among her peers, she identified heavy menstrual bleeding as one of the major challenges some female students experience during their menstrual periods.

She advised young girls experiencing menstruation for the first time not to be afraid or ashamed because menstruation is a normal part of life. She encouraged them to maintain good personal hygiene, monitor their menstrual cycle, and seek guidance whenever they have concerns.

The interviews revealed that although many students understand the importance of menstrual hygiene, financial constraints, inadequate sanitation facilities, menstrual pain, and the stigma surrounding menstruation continue to affect female students’ well-being.

The respondents unanimously called on the university management, health professionals, nongovernmental organizations, and government agencies to intensify awareness campaigns, improve sanitation facilities on campus, and make sanitary products more affordable and accessible. They noted that creating an environment where menstruation can be discussed openly without shame would improve the health, confidence, and academic performance of female students.

By Faith Andrew Female students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, have called for increased awareness of menstrual hygiene, saying proper menstrual care is essential for good health, confidence, and academic performance.
