As part of my beat reporting assignment in Journalism and Media Studies, I conducted a simulated interview with a staff member of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, to assess the leadership of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Asagba<\/strong>. The interviewee was Mrs. Vivian Enemo<\/strong> of the University Bursary Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs. Enemo, who has worked at the university for several years, shared her views on the changes she has observed since Professor Asagba assumed office as Vice Chancellor. According to her, one of the first qualities she noticed about his leadership is his willingness to listen to staff members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She explained that under his administration, staff welfare has received greater attention, leading to reforms that were previously absent. As an example, she cited the promotion of some non-teaching staff after they successfully wrote promotion examinations, describing it as evidence of the Vice Chancellor’s commitment to career development and merit-based advancement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs. Enemo also noted that Professor Asagba has strengthened accountability among academic staff by ensuring that lecturers carry out their responsibilities effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on the Vice Chancellor’s vision for the university, she said Professor Asagba is committed to transforming DELSU into a technology-driven institution. According to her, he believes that modern technology should be integrated into university administration and academic activities to improve efficiency for both staff and students. She described this vision as forward-looking and necessary for keeping the institution competitive in today’s digital world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She further described Professor Asagba as a leader who encourages dialogue and values the opinions of his staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“A good leader is someone who does not only give instructions but also listens to those working with him,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked about the major reforms introduced under the current administration, Mrs. Enemo highlighted the digitization of the university’s payment system. She explained that before Professor Asagba assumed office, payments such as school fees, medical fees, and other charges were made physically at banks. Today, students can complete these transactions through the university’s online portal, making the process faster, more convenient, and less stressful for students and their parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also pointed to staff and community welfare initiatives introduced during the administration. According to her, the Vice Chancellor established a six-monthly medical check-up programme for staff while extending health outreach services to students and members of the surrounding community. In addition, she said the university organized a one-day training programme focused on education and institutional activities, which has benefited both staff and students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discussing the university’s academic performance, Mrs. Enemo observed that DELSU has maintained its reputation as a research-oriented institution. However, she expressed the view that some lecturers could demonstrate greater commitment to research, identifying it as an area that still requires improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the interview, it is evident that Mrs. Vivian Enemo holds a positive opinion of Professor Samuel Asagba’s leadership as Vice Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka. She believes his administration has promoted staff welfare, strengthened accountability, embraced technology, improved administrative processes, and prioritized the health and well-being of members of the university community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although she acknowledged that greater commitment to research by some academic staff remains necessary, she concluded that the university has made significant progress under Professor Asagba’s leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interview demonstrates that effective leadership extends beyond issuing directives.
