The presence of Delta State University (DELSU) has significantly boosted the local economy, with thousands of students and staff relying on businesses for food, accommodation, transportation, clothing, and other essential services.

Markets and shops across the town witness steady commercial activities, with traders selling foodstuffs, clothing, electronics, cosmetics, and household items. Food vendors, restaurants, and other small businesses also continue to attract large numbers of customers, particularly students, who constitute a significant portion of Abraka’s population.

Despite the vibrant commercial environment, business owners and residents say they are facing increasing economic challenges caused by the rising cost of goods and services. Prices of food items and other essential commodities have continued to increase, making it more difficult for many households to meet their daily needs.

Traders also attribute the rising prices of goods to the high cost of transporting commodities from major markets to Abraka, a development that has further increased the financial burden on consumers.

Transportation remains a vital component of the local economy. Commercial motorcycle operators, tricycle riders, and other transport providers offer essential services to residents and students travelling within Abraka and around the university community. However, the increasing cost of fuel and vehicle maintenance has led to higher transport fares, placing additional pressure on commuters.

Despite these challenges, small and medium-sized enterprises continue to play a vital role in creating employment opportunities and sustaining economic activities in the town. Many young people are engaged in businesses such as barbing, hairdressing, fashion design, phone repairs, mobile money services, catering, and online businesses.

Residents and business owners have called for improved infrastructure, better road networks, reliable electricity supply, and policies that support small businesses. They believe that enhanced infrastructure and a more stable business environment would encourage investment, create more employment opportunities, and stimulate further economic growth.

As Abraka continues to develop, its economy is expected to remain driven by trade, education, transportation, and small businesses. However, addressing the challenges of rising living costs and increasing business expenses will be essential to achieving sustainable economic growth and improving the standard of living for residents.

By Righteous Ishaka Economic activities in Abraka continue to expand as the town remains a major commercial hub for residents, traders, students, and visitors.
