The Department of Theatre Arts at Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has initiated a talent scouting partnership with a coalition of Asaba-based Nollywood directors to bridge the gap between academic training and the professional entertainment industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The partnership, unveiled on Thursday at the university’s main campus, is expected to take full effect during the forthcoming Faculty of Arts Week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the arrangement, accredited film producers and casting directors will have access to the university’s Arts Theatre to identify outstanding undergraduate actors, scriptwriters, and set designers during stage performances conducted as part of their continuous assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative is designed to provide students with opportunities to secure professional acting roles, production internships, and industry exposure before completing their degree programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For years, the thriving Nollywood industry in Asaba, located a short distance from Abraka, has largely operated independently of the university’s creative arts programmes. The new collaboration aims to establish a direct pathway between the university and the film industry, enabling students to transition more easily into professional careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on the development, a senior coordinator of practical productions in the department described the initiative as a significant step toward preparing students for the realities of the entertainment industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Entertainment on campus is no longer just about leisure; it is a multi-million-naira industry, and our students are being trained to take their place in that market. By bringing industry professionals to sit in our audience, we are transforming our semester practicals into live job interviews,” the coordinator said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students have welcomed the initiative, saying it has motivated them to approach their practical performances with greater dedication and professionalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Omasanl Roland<\/strong>, a 400-level Theatre Arts student<\/strong> preparing for her final-year production, said the possibility of performing before established Nollywood directors had changed students’ mindset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Knowing that a major Nollywood director might be in the audience completely changes how we approach our stage plays. We are not just acting for grades anymore; we are performing for our future careers, and this gives us a significant advantage,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The department expects the scouting programme to commence during rehearsals for its 18th Convocation Drama<\/strong> next month, marking what stakeholders believe will be a new phase in strengthening collaboration between Delta State University and Nigeria’s film industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

University officials and students expressed optimism that the partnership would enhance practical learning, improve graduate employability, and create greater opportunities for aspiring creative professionals within and beyond the university.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
