class="wp-block-paragraph">A pro-mental health awareness group has organised a sensitization conference at Delta state university, Abraka.

The event, which held at Site 3 of the Abraka campus, was tagged “Mind Over Matters,” and essentially aimed to educate participants on the importance of caring for their mental health and breaking the stigma surrounding mental illness

The programme began with an opening address from the organisers, who welcomed participants and explained that the event was designed to encourage people to prioritise their mental well-being in the same way they prioritise their physical health.

They noted that many individuals face emotional and psychological challenges daily but often hesitate to seek help because of fear, shame, or lack of information.

READ ALSO: <a the Head of Psychology Department at DESU, Prof. Lucky Nwanzu discussed common mental health issues affecting people, especially young adults and students, explaining that academic pressure, financial difficulties, family problems, social expectations, loneliness and excessive use of social media can negatively affect a person’s mental state.

On her part, Mrs Imanioroh Edesiri emphasised that mental health is a crucial aspect of overall health and that ignoring signs of emotional distress can lead to serious consequences.

Edesiri advised the participants to pay attention to warning signs such as persistent sadness, anxiety, mood swings, poor concentration, sleep problems, loss of interest in daily activities and feelings of hopelessness.

She further encouraged the attendees to speak openly with trusted friends, family members, lecturers, counsellors, religious leaders, or healthcare professionals whenever they experience emotional challenges, noting that seeking help should never be seen as a sign of weakness.

<p discuss mental health without fear of discrimination or judgment, observing that increasing awareness would help reduce stigma and encourage more people to seek professional assistance when necessary.

They also encouraged the event participants to adopt healthy habits such as exercising regularly, getting adequate sleep, maintaining a balanced diet, avoiding harmful substances and building positive relationships that promote emotional well-being.

As the conference came to an end, attendees were reminded that mental health matters to everyone and that taking care of the mind is essential for living a healthy and productive life.

The conference also featured interactive sessions where participants were given the opportunity to ask questions and share personal experiences.

READ ALOS: Many attendees expressed appreciation for the programme, stating that it helped them better understand the importance of mental health and the need to support people going through difficult periods.

The event concluded with a call for continuous awareness programmes and community support initiatives to ensure that mental health remains a priority for all.

Meanwhile, as concerns over mental health continue to grow among university students, the Faculty of Pharmacy at Delta State University, Abraka has intensified efforts aimed at supporting students through mentorship programmes and recreational activities designed to reduce academic stress and improve their overall well-being.

Studying pharmacy in Nigeria is widely regarded as one of the most demanding academic pursuits, with students often facing rigorous coursework, lengthy laboratory sessions, frequent examinations and the pressure to maintain high academic standards.

These challenges have contributed to increasing cases of depression, academic setbacks and, in some instances, withdrawal from school among students struggling to cope with the demands of the programme.

BY MIRACLE IYANGBE A pro-mental health awareness group has organised a sensitization conference at Delta state
