{"id":2486,"date":"2026-07-29T04:14:26","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T03:14:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=2486"},"modified":"2026-07-29T04:15:52","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T03:15:52","slug":"how-to-beat-the-housing-shortage-at-delta-state-university-abraka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=2486","title":{"rendered":"How To Beat The Housing Shortage At Delta State University, Abraka"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Daniel Akur<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, is facing a significant student housing shortage, with over 35,000 students competing for limited on-campus hostel spaces that can only accommodate around 2,000.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The acute deficit has forced many students into off-campus private hostels, where high rents, variable quality, and security concerns have become common complaints. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Private accommodations around campuses, particularly near Campus 3, are in high demand, with some students reporting exorbitant fees and inadequate facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response, the Delta State Executive Council, under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, recently approved the construction of new male and female hostel blocks across the state\u2019s nine tertiary institutions, with DELSU expected to benefit significantly from the initiative.       <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commissioner for Higher Education Nyerhovwo Tonukari highlighted the crisis, noting that the new hostels aim to ease pressure on students and reduce reliance on often unregulated private options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additional plans include completing abandoned projects like a 522-bed hostel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">University hostels, such as Abraka Hall (male), Ethiope Hall, and Council Hall (female), currently charge between \u20a655,000 and \u20a685,000 per session, but allocation remains highly competitive and limited mostly to certain categories of students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students and stakeholders have welcomed the government\u2019s move, hoping it will improve living conditions, reduce financial burdens, and enhance the overall learning environment at one of Delta State\u2019s leading institutions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Construction is anticipated to begin soon as part of broader efforts to expand infrastructure.      <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A well know landlord in Abraka community named Mr Kunle, emphasize on the matter concerning the house and accomodation stresse which students are passing through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stated that fingers should be pointed to the government because there are inadequate quality hostel accommodation for students who reside in Abraka, so therefore, most of them who are landlords would therefore increase their price of their various apartments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For him when students come to town the price and cost of living drastically increases, so therefore they increase their price to meet the expenses of life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This development marks a critical step toward addressing long-standing accommodation challenges in Abraka. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Daniel Akur Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, is facing a significant student housing shortage, with over 35,000 students competing for limited on-campus hostel spaces that can only accommodate around 2,000.
