The Director of Sports of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies and a member of the Delta State University (DELSU) Students’ Union Government (SUG), Comr. Sunday Collins Efe, has said that his desire to give back to the student community motivated him to seek public office.

Comr. Collins made this known during an interview with campus journalists, where he reflected on his leadership journey, sources of inspiration, and commitment to student service.

According to him, he has benefited greatly from the student community over the years and believes it is important to contribute positively in return.

“I have been a beneficiary of the students’ community and have learned a lot over the years. It was time for me to serve and give back,” he said.

Speaking on the individual who inspires his leadership style, Comr. Collins expressed appreciation for Comr. Anthony Jennifer, the former President of the Communication and Media Studies Students’ Association (COMMESSA).

“I will forever be grateful to Comrade Anthony Jennifer, the former President of COMMESSA. She inspired my political career, and I loved how she governed during her time in DELSU. She was a true leader and remains an icon to me till this day,” he stated.

Offering advice to students interested in leadership positions, the Director of Sports emphasized the importance of selfless service and sacrifice.

“Anyone who wants to get into leadership should be ready to serve selflessly. At the end of the day, you are giving back to society. You give more than you gain from the Students’ Union Government — your time, resources, and the effort required to balance academics and politics,” he said.

On how he remains motivated while addressing student-related issues, Comr. Collins explained that his passion for sports and dedication to his office continue to inspire him.

He noted that he has been actively involved in sporting activities from an early age and remains committed to promoting sports development among students.

The Director of Sports also commended the President of the 32nd SUG Administration for encouraging peaceful conflict resolution and dialogue.

“He always tells us that before getting into disagreements or conflicts, we should create room for dialogue. That is why we rarely witness major conflict outbreaks on campus,” he said.

Addressing the student body, Comr. Collins appealed for patience and understanding regarding the operations of the Students’ Union Government.

“We are humans, and I understand the concerns of students. Some processes take time because the Students’ Union Government is not above due process. For example, with NELFUND, there are several procedures that must be followed before funds are disbursed. Many students expect immediate payment once approval is announced, but it does not work that way.

“Students should remain patient because we are constantly engaging with the university management through dialogue and consultations. We will continue to serve to the best of our abilities,” he added.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Students’ Union Government to representing students’ interests and working closely with university authorities to address issues affecting student welfare and development.
