According to them, the increase came as a surprise, particularly at a time when many residents and students are already grappling with the rising cost of living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some tenants alleged that the annual rent was increased from \u20a6350,000 to \u20a6500,000, making it difficult for many of them to renew their accommodation. They said the sudden hike had disrupted their financial plans and forced some residents to consider relocating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mrs. Grace Okafor, one of the tenants, said the increase had placed a heavy burden on her family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe know that prices of goods and services have gone up, but we expected to be informed before the rent was increased. Many of us had already planned our finances based on the previous amount. This has really put us in a difficult situation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A student tenant, Daniel Efe, said the increase would have a significant impact on students living off campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMost students depend on support from their parents or guardians. An unexpected increase like this makes it difficult for many of us to afford decent accommodation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some residents also complained that despite the increase in rent, several problems in the building remained unresolved. They cited poor drainage, irregular water supply, leaking roofs and faulty electrical fittings as issues requiring urgent attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When contacted, the landlord explained that the rent review was necessary because of the rising cost of maintaining the property. He said the prices of building materials, labour and other maintenance expenses had increased significantly over the past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis decision was not taken to make life difficult for the tenants. The cost of maintaining the property has increased, and the previous rent is no longer sustainable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Community leaders urged both the landlord and the tenants to resolve the matter through dialogue.
