Although the exact circumstances surrounding the incident were not fully disclosed, the accident prompted widespread concern about vehicular movement and pedestrian safety within the university.

In response, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samuel Asagba, announced an immediate ban on students driving private vehicles on campus as part of measures to prevent similar incidents and improve safety for staff, students and visitors.

Under the new policy, students are prohibited from bringing or driving private vehicles within the university campus. The university has also intensified the enforcement of traffic and movement regulations, with greater emphasis on protecting pedestrians.

To accommodate students who own vehicles, the university constructed a parking lot near the Site III Main Gate, where students are expected to park before proceeding into the campus.

The policy has generated mixed reactions among students. While some welcomed the decision, arguing that the increasing number of private vehicles had made the campus less safe for pedestrians, others suggested that stricter traffic regulations, lower speed limits and designated parking areas within the campus would have been preferable to a complete ban.

Many members of staff, however, supported the measure, noting that the university should provide a safe environment where students, lecturers, staff and visitors can move freely without the risk of vehicle-related accidents.

At the time of the reports, the university’s most significant confirmed action remained the prohibition of students’ private vehicles on campus. There was no verified public information regarding disciplinary action against the student involved or the professor’s long-term medical condition.

The incident has sparked broader discussions on road safety within the university community and led to a significant policy change aimed at reducing the risk of future vehicle-related accidents at Delta State University, Abraka.

By Ese Williams Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has banned students from driving private vehicles within the university campus following a road accident in February 2026 in which a student reportedly struck a professor, raising concerns over campus safety.
