As a result, rooms originally designed for one or two occupants are now occupied by three or more students, while some hostels accommodate as many as five or six students in a single room.

Students say the overcrowding has resulted in poor ventilation, inadequate sleeping space, lack of privacy, poor sanitation and frequent disagreements among roommates.

Miss Precious Okoye, a 300-level student, said sharing a room with three other students has negatively affected her academic performance.

“Most times I cannot focus on reading because I am a night reader. My roommates are either making midnight calls or watching movies at loud volumes. I cannot concentrate because of the distractions,” she said.

Responding to the complaint, one of her roommates defended her actions, saying:

“I also paid for the room, so I should be able to do what I want. If it is not pleasing, you can rent your personal room.”

Another student, Arinze Pearl, a 100-level student residing at the NDDC School Hostel, described the challenges of living in an overcrowded room.

“There is hardly space for my belongings. Everyone drops their things anywhere, making the room messy and stuffy. There is poor ventilation because of the number of occupants, and the room is always uncomfortable and hot,” she said.

Speaking on the issue, Mr. Philip Okoye, landlord of Saint Donald Hostel in Benbo, attributed the problem to the high demand for accommodation.

“Every academic session, hundreds of students come looking for accommodation, but there are simply not enough rooms. I would like to accommodate everyone, but the available spaces are limited. Sharing rooms also helps students who cannot afford a personal room,” he said.

Students living off campus expressed hope that practical measures would be introduced before the next academic session to reduce the accommodation shortage and improve their living conditions.

Many also called on the university management to collaborate with private developers to build more affordable hostels and expand accommodation facilities for the growing student population.

By Chidimma Nzewi Students in Abraka have expressed concern over the shortage of accommodation, saying the situation has forced many of them to share overcrowded rooms despite the discomfort, lack of privacy and poor living conditions.
