The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of students allegedly arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, warning that failure to comply with its demand could trigger a peaceful mass protest by students across the institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The demand was contained in a formal petition addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, Asaba, following the reported arrest of several DELSU students on the night of July 21, 2026, in Abraka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the letter, dated July 22, 2026, the union expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that intelligence available to it indicated the students were arrested at about 10:00 p.m. and later transferred to the Delta State Police Command headquarters in Asaba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Signed by the SUG Executive President, Amb. Barr. Comr. Kingsley Ovedje Dumuje, and the Secretary-General, Hon. Comr. Oliseyum Victory, the petition described the arrests as unjust, alleging they were carried out without the presentation of an arrest warrant and under circumstances that did not suggest the commission of any immediate offence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The union argued that the incident occurred at a sensitive period when students are intensifying preparations for the university’s second semester examinations, which are expected to commence within two weeks. It noted that the continued detention of the affected students could disrupt their academic activities and negatively impact their educational future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the SUG, while the Nigeria Police Force has a constitutional responsibility to maintain law and order, law enforcement actions must be conducted within the confines of the law and with due respect for the rights of citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The arrest of students under these circumstances is counterproductive to the peace we all seek and raises serious concerns regarding the safety of students and the protection of their rights,” the petition stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The union therefore called on the police authorities to release the affected students unconditionally, stressing that the demand was made in the interest of justice, fairness, and the protection of students’ fundamental rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SUG further warned that if the matter was not resolved within 24 hours, it would have no option but to mobilize the student body for what it described as a peaceful protest aimed at demanding justice and safeguarding students’ educational rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Copies of the petition were sent to the Delta State Government, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Commissioner for Higher Education, the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Students’ Affairs, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), SUG presidents of tertiary institutions across Delta State, and the general public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The development has generated concern within the university community, with many students closely monitoring the situation and hoping for a swift resolution to prevent further disruption to academic activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of the time of filing this report, the Delta State Police Command had not issued an official response to the allegations or the demands made by the DELSU Students’ Union Government.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
