{"id":2594,"date":"2026-07-29T18:22:55","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T17:22:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=2594"},"modified":"2026-07-29T18:22:56","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T17:22:56","slug":"abraka-streets-submerged-flooding-devastates-student-areas-millions-in-losses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=2594","title":{"rendered":"Abraka Streets Submerged: Flooding Devastates Student Areas, Millions In Losses"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Sonia Akpebe<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residents and students in Abraka, particularly along Winners Road and areas opposite the Campus III Main Gate, are grappling with the aftermath of torrential rainfall that submerged streets and inundated homes and businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The relentless downpour, which lasted for three consecutive days, caused widespread flooding, resulting in significant financial losses and considerable hardship for residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The affected areas are among the most populated residential communities for students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka. Floodwaters rose rapidly, entering hostels, shops, and even primary schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In several shops, goods worth millions of naira were destroyed, leaving business owners with devastating losses. The situation has been particularly difficult for students, many of whom found their living spaces completely flooded. With limited financial resources, relocating or finding effective ways to remove the water has proven difficult for many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adding to the students&#8217; challenges, the university&#8217;s second-semester examinations are fast approaching. The disruption caused by the flooding has made it increasingly difficult for many students to concentrate on their studies and prepare for their examinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several students returned from classes to find their rooms filled with water, with personal belongings, including laptops, mobile phones, beds, books, and other valuables, damaged by the flood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the affected students, Miss Dafiaghor Oghenenyore Jovita, a 300-Level Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) student at Delta State University, said she had lived in Abraka for three years before recently moving into a new apartment, only to experience the flooding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to her, the compound had existing structural and environmental problems even before the heavy rainfall. She explained that the premises lacked proper maintenance and had no caretaker, leaving residents to handle issues on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also described poor living conditions, including the presence of millipedes, centipedes, and scorpions. According to her, the ceiling has visible openings, the roof leaks whenever it rains, and strong winds often blow sand into the rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miss Jovita said she had gone to the university library with friends to study for the upcoming examinations but returned to discover that water had entered her room through the bathroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She further alleged that when she reported the situation to her landlady, she was told to vacate the apartment if she could no longer cope with the conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Expressing her frustration, Miss Jovita said she no longer wished to remain in the apartment, even if repairs were eventually carried out. She added that video recordings documenting the flooding in her room had been made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incident has renewed concerns over the state of drainage infrastructure in flood-prone parts of Abraka, particularly in communities with large student populations.
