{"id":260,"date":"2026-07-01T08:36:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T07:36:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=260"},"modified":"2026-07-09T16:25:51","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T15:25:51","slug":"delsu-sug-moves-to-tame-growing-social-vices-on-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=260","title":{"rendered":"DELSU-SUG Moves To Tame Growing Social Vices On Campus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">By Vivian Josiah and Destiny Uzoma<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Worried by the increasing rate of social vices among young people, the leadership of the Students\u2019 Union Government at Delta State University, Abraka, has organised a special programme to sensistise students on the ills of social vices with the aim of educating students on the realities, causes, effects and possible solutions to the imbroglio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tagged, \u201cUnmasked: The Truth About Social Vices\u201d, the programme was held on Wednesday, June 10, 2026 at Site of the university\u2019s Abraka campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event created an opportunity for students to learn from speakers and engage in discussions on issues affecting academic and personal development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Various speakers at the event took turns to shed light on the issue, describing social vices as harmful behaviours that negatively affect individuals and society, warning that such behaviours may influence students\u2019 decisions, academic performance and future opportunities if not properly addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>READ ALSO: <\/strong><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=45\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"45\">Group Launches Sports, Fitness Activities For Abraka Women<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the Speakers, Dr. Hilda Olele explained that social vices among students do not begin suddenly but often develop through repeated actions, negative influence and poor choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Olele, who served as the first keynote speaker, centered her presentation on how comprehensive gender education serves as a powerful tool in combating campus social vices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She explicitly tied a lack of institutional and social awareness to the prevalence of drug and substance abuse, as well as sexual violence on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Gender education helps us to understand and dismantle gender inequality,&#8221; Dr. Olele stated, strongly emphasising the need to eradicate discrimination within the university community to ensure a safer environment for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Olele, who is the institution\u2019s Director of the Centre for Gender and Development Studies, highlighted some causes of social vices among students, including peer pressure, desire for quick money, substance abuse, poor guidance and harmful social influences, stressing that students should remain conscious of the decisions they make because such choices can shape their future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Associate Professor of economics averred that social vices can result in poor academic performance, lack of concentration, emotional stress, damaged reputation, school dropout and reduced opportunities for personal growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond these cnsequences, Olele also warned that harmful behaviours linked to social vices could negatively impart not only academic success but also relationships and future goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>READ ALSO:<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=141\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"141\">A Roof Over Their Heads: The Housing Struggles of DELSU Students<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On his part, the SUG Director of Humanitarian Services and Value Orientation, Comr. Chiamaka Nwafor decried that social vices have become an increasing concern among young people and students across campuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nwafor encouraged students to become more intentional about their choices and avoid activities that may negatively influence their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to her, maintaining discipline and making informed decisions are important steps towards personal growth and academic excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The student leader reminded the students that overcoming social vices requires conscious effort, responsible decisions and consistent commitment to personal and academic growth. Prosper Odokpor, the Director of Travel and Exchange for the National Association of Nigerian Students Joint Campus Committee (NANS-JCC), highlighted ways students can overcome social vices and remain academically focused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Odokpor, students should choose positive friendships, manage their time effectively and develop self-discipline, urging them to seek support from lecturers, parents, mentors and counsellors whenever they face challenges that may affect their academic performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The campus leader admonished the students to engage in productive activities that contribute to their development rather than habits that create distractions, praying them to stay committed to their studies, avoid behaviours that could limit their opportunities and develop values that support long-term success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The programme ended with a renewed call for students to remain focused on their educational goals, build good character and contribute positively to society.
