Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, is set to enhance students’ welfare with plans to construct a 1,000-bed hostel and a modern sports complex, Vice-Chancellor Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba has announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Asagba made the disclosure while briefing journalists ahead of the university’s 18th Convocation Ceremony. He said the projects form part of the institution’s commitment to improving campus life and providing students with a more conducive learning environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the proposed hostel will be funded through intervention funds, while additional accommodation will be developed through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He explained that the initiative is aimed at addressing the shortage of hostel spaces on campus by providing students with safer and more comfortable accommodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Students’ welfare remains one of our top priorities. We are committed to providing facilities that will make learning and campus life better for everyone,” Professor Asagba said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vice-Chancellor also announced plans to construct a modern sports complex featuring facilities for football, athletics, basketball, volleyball, and other sporting activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that the complex would encourage greater student participation in sports, help identify young talents, and improve the university’s performance in inter-university sporting competitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Asagba further disclosed that the university has expanded its work-study programme to enable more indigent students to support themselves financially while pursuing their education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that DELSU has maintained its tuition fees despite the country’s economic challenges in an effort to ensure that higher education remains accessible and affordable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We believe no student should lose the opportunity to study because of financial difficulties. That is why we have continued to support programmes that ease the burden on our students,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On academic development, the Vice-Chancellor revealed that DELSU has strengthened partnerships with universities and research institutions in China, Canada, the United States, and South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, the collaborations will create opportunities for research, staff development, innovation, and student exchange programmes while enhancing the university’s international reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many students welcomed the announcement, expressing optimism that the projects would significantly improve life on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deborah Akpoveta, a 300-Level Mass Communication student, said additional hostel spaces would reduce the challenges students face in securing accommodation off campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Finding accommodation around the school is stressful and expensive. If this hostel project is completed, it will make life easier for many students and improve our safety,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another student, Michael Efe, described the proposed sports complex as a welcome development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“A better sports complex will encourage more students to participate in sports and help the university discover talented athletes who can compete at higher levels,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposed projects have generated excitement within the university community, with many students expressing hope that they will be completed as planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If implemented, the new hostel, sports complex, and expanded student support programmes are expected to improve students’ welfare and further strengthen DELSU’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading state universities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
