Following their guilty plea, their counsel appealed to the court to temper justice with mercy, urging the judge to consider their admission of guilt as a sign of remorse. Justice Nwite subsequently sentenced both men to life imprisonment on major counts while imposing additional prison terms of twenty years on several other counts. The sentences are to run in accordance with the court’s directives.

However, shortly after the judgment, the DSS expressed dissatisfaction with the sentence, insisting that life imprisonment does not adequately reflect the magnitude of the crimes committed by the convicts. According to officials of the agency, the service intends to appeal the judgment and seek the maximum punishment permitted under Nigerian law.

A senior official of the DSS described the judgment as too lenient, noting that the crimes linked to the Ansaru commanders resulted in the loss of innocent lives and widespread suffering among victims and their families. The official argued that the punishment should correspond to the severity of the offences and serve as a strong deterrent to individuals involved in terrorism and violent extremism.

The DSS particularly referenced the killing of two teachers abducted during the widely publicised school kidnapping incident in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. According to the agency, intelligence reports suggested that the teachers were killed by their captors in an attempt to pressure the government into securing the release of the Ansaru commanders. The service maintained that the tragic deaths of the teachers and the pain suffered by their families warrant a stronger judicial response.

The agency further stated that allowing the convicted terrorists to serve only life imprisonment may not satisfy the demands of justice, especially given the scale of violence associated with the group. Officials argued that terrorism-related offences continue to pose significant threats to national security, public safety, and social stability, making it necessary for courts to impose punishments capable of discouraging future acts of terrorism.

Ansaru, formally known as Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimeena Fi Biladis Sudan, is regarded as one of Nigeria’s most notorious terrorist organisations and has been linked to numerous attacks, kidnappings, and violent operations across different regions of the country. Security experts have frequently identified the group as an extremist faction with ideological and operational links to international terrorist networks.

The conviction of the two commanders has been described by security analysts as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts. Many observers believe the successful prosecution demonstrates the government’s commitment to holding terrorist leaders accountable for their actions. Nevertheless, the DSS insists that accountability can only be fully achieved when the punishment imposed reflects the seriousness of the crimes committed.

Legal experts note that the appeal process will provide an opportunity for a higher court to review the sentence and determine whether the punishment aligns with existing terrorism laws. Should the appeal succeed, the appellate court may impose a different sentence in accordance with the provisions of the law and the facts presented before the court.

The case has attracted nationwide attention due to its implications for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and the broader debate surrounding appropriate punishments for terrorism-related offences. Families of victims, security agencies, and members of the public are expected to closely monitor the outcome of the proposed appeal.

As the DSS prepares to file its appeal, the judgment remains one of the most significant terrorism-related decisions delivered by the Federal High Court in recent times, highlighting the continuing challenges faced by Nigeria in combating terrorism and ensuring justice for victims of violent extremism.

By Immaculate Igwebuike The Department of State Services (DSS) has announced plans to challenge the life imprisonment sentences handed to two senior commanders of the Ansaru terrorist group by the Federal High Court in Abuja, arguing that the punishment is inadequate considering the gravity of the offences committed by the convicts.
