The event, themed “The Hallmark Of A Comrade,” focused on leadership, service, and the core values expected of student activists, while also calling on DELSU management to revamp its alumni structure to strengthen mentorship for student leaders.

The event also featured the Investiture of Comradeship Emeritus to honour distinguished comrades who have contributed immensely to student welfare, advocacy, and the growth of the Comrade Community in DELSU over the years.

In his welcome address, the host of the event, Comr. Efe Kevin Eyela, recalled the DCC’s journey as a “collective triumph for the Community.” He noted that, “This event once seemed impossible because of the many obstacles before us. But through unity, resilience, and the spirit of comradeship, we have been able to gather here today to celebrate our values and set the tone for the future.”

Speaking at the event, the Executive President of the SUG, Amb. Barr. Comr. Dumeje O. Kingsley, said the gathering was aimed at mentoring the present generation of student leaders and reawakening the consciousness of activism in the university.

“The hallmark of a comrade is selflessness, courage, and commitment to the people. This programme is designed to remind us why we are here. We are not here for titles or noise, but to serve,” he stated.

The SUG President further urged DELSU management to revamp its alumni structure.

“Our alumni are a vital part of our growth and development. DELSU management should revamp its alumni structure so that past leaders can mentor, guide, and support current student activists. When alumni are properly engaged, the struggle becomes easier because we will have elders who have walked the path before us,” he said.

Also speaking, Comr. Efe Kevin Eyela emphasized the importance of continuity in the struggle for student rights.

“We are building on the foundation laid by those before us. Today’s comrades must be ready to speak truth to power, defend the interests of students, and uphold integrity at all times. Leadership is not about convenience; it is about sacrifice,” he said.

Guest speakers at the event delivered lectures on leadership, accountability, and student representation. They included Prof. Samuel O. Asagba, Vice Chancellor of DELSU; Chief Hon. Augustine Ogedegbe, JP; and Hon. Collins Oghenekruona Leonard. Other speakers were Comr. Sagboje Odiri Milton, Comr. Prince Koyoyo Uhrorho, and Dr. Pedro Chibuzo Obi.

Prof. Asagba, in his remarks, commended the SUG and the Comrade Community for organising a programme that promotes intellectual engagement among students. He urged students to balance activism with academics.

“You can be a comrade and still be an excellent student. The university is proud of you when you combine both,” he said.

Chief Ogedegbe charged the students to remain peaceful in their advocacy.

“Comradeship is about dialogue first. Fight for your rights, but do it with wisdom and respect for constituted authority,” he stated.

The theme, “The Hallmark Of A Comrade,” sparked robust discussions and panel sessions on activism, accountability, gender inclusion in student politics, and the role of social media in modern-day advocacy. Participants agreed that the new generation of comrades must embrace technology while staying true to the ideals of service.

Students who attended the event expressed appreciation for the insights shared. A 300-level student who spoke on condition of anonymity said:

“I learned that being a comrade is not about noise, but about service and impact. The speakers opened my eyes to what real leadership looks like.”

Another student added:

“The stories from the elders really inspired me to get more involved in SUG activities. I used to think SUG was just about protests, but now I see it is about problem-solving.”

A female student leader also noted that the event gave her the courage to aspire to leadership positions.

“Hearing women in leadership speak today made me believe that I too can lead. The hallmark of a comrade is courage, and I am ready to take that step,” she said.

The Investiture of Comradeship Emeritus segment was a major highlight of the programme. Awardees were celebrated for their contributions to student welfare, peaceful advocacy, and for laying solid foundations for the present SUG administration. They were presented with plaques and certificates of honour.

In his closing remarks, Comr. Eyela thanked all guests, students, and members of the Comrade Community for making the event a success despite the challenges. He promised that the DCC would continue to organise programmes that build capacity and promote unity among students.

The Comrade Community noted that similar programmes would be organised every semester to ensure that leadership values are passed down to incoming students. They also called on stakeholders, alumni, and well-meaning Nigerians to support student leadership development in DELSU.

The event ended with networking sessions, group photographs, and a renewed call for unity among DELSU students.

By Destiny John The Delta State University Comrade Community on July 15, 2026, held its annual flagship event, “A Journey To Odyssey,” at the FMS Large Hall, Site III, Abraka.
