A commercial bus driver, Emeka, said the steady rise in fuel prices has made it increasingly difficult to keep fares affordable while still covering daily running costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Every week the price changes, but our passengers still expect us to charge the same old fare,” he said. “If we increase it, they complain. If we don’t, we run at a loss.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His situation mirrors what many transport operators and commuters across the country say they now face daily, as fluctuating fuel prices continue to ripple through transportation costs, food distribution, and household budgets nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concerns raised by commuters and drivers reflect the broader frustration many Nigerians say they continue to experience, even as government officials maintain that ongoing energy sector reforms will eventually ease the pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, a Federal Government official recently stated during a television interview that fuel supply has “significantly stabilized” nationwide, a comment that has sparked debate among citizens who say pump prices and transport fares tell a different story in their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many low-income earners, the increased cost of transportation has meant difficult trade-offs. A trader, Amina, said she now closes her stall earlier than usual on some days simply because the cost of commuting to and from the market no longer justifies a full day’s sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“By the time I subtract transport fare from what I make, there’s barely anything left,” she said. “Some days I just stay home.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A civil servant, Yusuf, said his monthly transport allowance no longer covers half of what he spends commuting to work each week, forcing him to cut back on other essentials just to keep up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I used to budget for transport and still have something left for feeding,” he said. “Now the transport alone eats into money meant for other things.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A small business owner, Ifeoma, who relies on delivery riders to move goods to customers, said she has had to raise her product prices twice this year just to offset rising delivery costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My customers don’t understand why prices keep going up, but if I don’t adjust, I’ll be running the business at a loss,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Economic analysts note that transport cost pass-through is one of the most direct ways fuel price volatility affects ordinary Nigerians, since it touches nearly every other price in the economy\u2014from food transported to markets to the cost of running small businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While some industry watchers remain optimistic that increased local refining capacity could stabilize prices over the medium term, many residents say relief has yet to reach their daily lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
