As the rainy season intensified, many residents said they had come to associate rainfall with anxiety rather than relief from the heat.

For students of Delta State University (DELSU), flooding has become more than an environmental challenge, as it now affects their daily academic routine. Many students are forced to wade through ankle-deep or knee-deep water to attend lectures, while others remain trapped in their hostels when roads become impassable.

A 300-level Accounting student described the experience as physically and emotionally exhausting.

“Imagine having a 7:00 a.m. lecture only to wake up and discover that your hostel surroundings have been completely submerged. Missing the lecture is not an option, so you step into ankle-deep or even knee-deep water, hoping to reach class on time. By the time you arrive, you are soaked, exhausted, frustrated and already distracted before the lecture begins.”

Students said the recurring floods have resulted in missed lectures, practical classes and tests, while the stress of navigating flooded roads often affects their concentration and academic performance. Many also worry about damaged personal belongings and the uncertainty of further rainfall.

The impact extends beyond the university community, with businesses across Abraka recording financial losses whenever heavy rainfall occurs. Flooded roads prevent customers from accessing shops, while water entering business premises damages goods, furniture and electrical equipment.

Residents also reported that floodwater frequently enters homes, destroying household property and forcing families to spend additional money replacing damaged belongings. Transportation has become increasingly difficult as motorists avoid flooded roads, leading commercial transport operators to increase fares.

Health experts and residents have also expressed concern over the public health risks associated with the flooding. Stagnant water provides breeding grounds for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of malaria, while contaminated floodwater exposes residents to waterborne diseases, particularly in areas with poor drainage systems.

To better understand the recurring flooding, interviews were conducted with students and residents who experience the problem each rainy season. Respondents identified heavy rainfall, inadequate drainage infrastructure, blocked drainage channels, poor urban planning and the town’s low-lying topography as the major causes of flooding in Abraka.

Many residents noted that several roads either lack drainage systems entirely or have channels too narrow to accommodate large volumes of rainwater. They added that indiscriminate disposal of refuse often blocks gutters, preventing water from flowing freely and causing it to overflow into streets and residential areas.

Respondents also pointed to the construction of buildings on natural waterways and floodplains, saying such developments have reduced the natural flow of runoff and worsened flooding across the town.

Although residents acknowledged previous government interventions, many believe they have not been sufficient to address the problem permanently.

Among the solutions proposed by respondents are the construction of wider drainage systems, retention ponds to temporarily store excess rainwater, elevated building foundations for new residential structures, improved waste management practices and stricter enforcement against building on waterways.

They also called for sustained government investment in flood control infrastructure, regular maintenance of drainage channels and improved town planning to reduce the frequency and impact of flooding.

Residents maintain that flooding is no longer a temporary seasonal inconvenience but a recurring problem affecting education, business activities, public health and the overall quality of life in Abraka.

Until lasting solutions are implemented, they fear many students will continue beginning each school day by navigating floodwaters rather than focusing on their education.

Christabel Diedemise is a 200-level Journalism and Media Studies student at Delta State University, Abraka.
