The Gender Mobile Initiative (GMI), in collaboration with the Centre for Gender and Development Studies (CGDS), Delta State University (DELSU), has organised a one-day Campus Safety Initiative aimed at promoting awareness of sexual harassment prevention and strengthening peer advocacy among students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The programme, held at the Faculty of Education 500 Capacity Lecture Theatre, Site III, attracted staff, students, university officials and other stakeholders committed to fostering a safer learning environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Declaring the event open on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Asagba, commended the Centre for Gender and Development Studies for organising the initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Asagba, who was represented by the Head of Economics Department, Prof. Callister Obi, noted that creating awareness about sexual harassment and equipping students with preventive and response strategies were essential to maintaining a safe and inclusive academic environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
READ ALSO: DELSU Scholar, Atajeromavwo Predicts Defining Impact Of Machine Learning<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n The event was divided into two sessions, beginning with a Policy Education Presentation facilitated by Dr. Sam of the Gender Mobile Initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During the session, Dr. Sam presented an overview of sexual harassment, explaining its various forms, appropriate responses to incidents, and practical strategies for preventing abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He also used interactive demonstrations to recreate different scenarios of sexual harassment, encouraging participants to identify inappropriate behaviours and discuss effective intervention measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A short film titled The Moment We Stand<\/em> was also screened to reinforce lessons on recognising, preventing and responding to sexual harassment, while highlighting the importance of supporting survivors and reporting incidents through appropriate channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n READ ALSO: Hope Rises for 160 Beneficiaries As Church Organises Free Medical Outreach in Abraka<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n The second session, titled Training and Capacity Building for Campus Champions<\/strong>, was facilitated by Dr. Sam alongside Miss Gift, both of the Gender Mobile Initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The facilitators introduced participants to the concept of Campus Champions, explaining their roles in promoting campus safety, organising peer networks and carrying out bystander interventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Through practical, real-life examples, participants were equipped with skills needed to identify warning signs, intervene safely and advocate against sexual harassment within the university community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Participants also engaged in an interactive question-and-answer session during which the facilitators responded to concerns and provided further clarification on issues relating to sexual harassment prevention and peer advocacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
