Many buyers said the relatively cheaper prices at the small market have made it their preferred shopping destination, particularly for students managing limited budgets.

Several students interviewed during the visit explained that shopping at the small market enables them to save money without compromising the quality of the food items they purchase.

A student who identified herself as Esther said she rarely visits the main market unless she cannot find what she needs at the smaller one.

“The small market is more affordable. I can buy tomatoes, pepper, and fish with the little money I have. Whenever I compare prices, I always end up returning here,” she said.

Another student, Michael, attributed his preference to the market’s proximity to Campus II and the savings on transportation.

“The market is close to Campus II, so I don’t spend money on transport. Even after buying foodstuffs, I still save something. That is why most students prefer this place,” he said.

One fish seller at the small market said the growing number of customers has boosted business in recent months.

“Students come here every morning because they know the prices are fair. We try our best to keep our prices lower than what is obtainable in the big market,” the trader said.

At the main market, however, some traders argued that their prices reflect the rising cost of transportation, shop rent, and other operating expenses. Despite these explanations, many shoppers maintained that the price difference between the two markets is significant enough to influence where they choose to buy their food.

With food prices remaining a major concern for students and households, the small market near DELSU Campus II Gate is gradually becoming the preferred destination for daily shopping, highlighting the growing importance of affordability in consumer purchasing decisions in Abraka.

By Ojefia Johannah As the cost of living continues to rise, many students and residents in Abraka are turning to the small market located near Delta State University (DELSU) Campus II Gate, where food items are reportedly sold at lower prices than those available in the town’s main market.
