The 2026 FIFA World Cup may have ended with Spain lifting the trophy after a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Argentina in the final, but the tournament has continued to dominate conversations for another reason. Football fans across the world remain divided over FIFA’s decision to award Spain’s Rodri the Golden Ball, while Argentina captain Lionel Messi received the Silver Ball despite another outstanding World Cup campaign.

The announcement has generated widespread reactions across social media, television programmes, and among football supporters, many of whom believe Messi’s performances throughout the tournament deserved recognition as the competition’s best player.

Messi, playing in what many believe could be his final World Cup, once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of football’s greatest players. The Argentine captain inspired his country with crucial goals, assists, and leadership as Argentina reached a third consecutive World Cup final. His influence was evident from the group stage through the knockout rounds, where he consistently delivered when his team needed him most.

Despite Messi’s remarkable performances, FIFA selected Rodri as the tournament’s best player. The Spanish midfielder played a key role in Spain’s successful campaign, controlling matches from midfield and helping his country secure its second FIFA World Cup title.

While many football analysts praised Rodri’s consistency and tactical intelligence, others argued that Messi’s individual brilliance and match-winning contributions made him the more deserving recipient of the Golden Ball.

The decision has since become one of the biggest talking points of the tournament, with fans expressing differing opinions over what should determine the award—individual excellence or contribution to a title-winning team.

Speaking with this reporter, football enthusiast and Lionel Messi supporter, Destiny Obaro, described the decision as disappointing.

“I respect Rodri because he had a fantastic tournament, but I honestly believe Messi deserved the Golden Ball. At 39, he carried Argentina to another World Cup final and influenced almost every match. His goals, assists, and leadership were exceptional,” Obaro said.

According to him, winning the World Cup should not automatically determine who is named the tournament’s best player.

“The Golden Ball is an individual award. It should go to the player who had the greatest impact throughout the competition, regardless of whether his team won the trophy. For me, that player was Lionel Messi,” he added.

Obaro also noted that the controversy would likely remain a subject of discussion for years.

“Football fans will never stop talking about this decision. Just like other controversial awards in football history, everyone has their own opinion. But nothing changes Messi’s legacy. He proved once again why millions consider him the greatest player of all time,” he said.

Although opinions remain divided, one fact is clear: Spain emerged as champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while Lionel Messi once again delivered a tournament remembered for his leadership, creativity, and determination.

Whether FIFA made the right decision may never receive a unanimous answer. However, the debate surrounding the Golden Ball has ensured that the closing chapter of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be remembered not only for Spain’s triumph but also for one of the tournament’s most controversial individual awards.
