The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone B (South-South), has condemned the alleged unlawful arrest, harassment, and extortion of students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, by operatives of the Delta State Police Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a press release issued by the association, NANS described the reported actions as a violation of the rights and dignity of students. The statement followed complaints and a petition reportedly submitted by the Delta State University Students\u2019 Union Government (SUG) to the Commissioner of Police over alleged cases of arbitrary arrests and extortion involving students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the statement, NANS demanded the immediate and unconditional release of any student allegedly detained unlawfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The association also called for a thorough investigation into the allegations, disciplinary action against any officer found guilty, and assurances from the Delta State Police Command that students would no longer be subjected to intimidation or arbitrary arrests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The student body warned that if its demands were not addressed promptly, it would temporarily relocate its secretariat to Asaba to coordinate a peaceful mass protest involving students across tertiary institutions in Delta State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on the development, Oju Great, a Mass Communication student of Delta State University, expressed concern over the reported incidents, saying students deserved protection rather than fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe reports are disturbing because every student should be able to move around freely without constantly worrying about being arrested or harassed. If anyone breaks the law, due process should be followed, but innocent students should not be treated like criminals. I believe the authorities should investigate these allegations thoroughly and ensure justice is done. This issue affects the confidence students have in security agencies,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another student, Precious Oghenevwede, a 300-level student, said the situation had created fear among students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMany students are now afraid of moving around, especially at night. We hope the police and school authorities can work together to resolve these issues peacefully. No student should have to choose between pursuing education and worrying about harassment,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NANS statement also directed its Joint Campus Committee (JCC) in Delta State to begin mobilising students for a peaceful demonstration in Asaba if the alleged victims were not released and those responsible were not held accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The association urged the Delta State Government, security agencies, and other stakeholders to intervene immediately to prevent further escalation of the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It maintained that students deserved to study in an environment where their rights were respected and protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of the time of filing this report, the Delta State Police Command had not publicly responded to the allegations contained in the NANS press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NANS ended its statement with the message: \u201cAn Injury To One Nigerian Student Is An Injury To All.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
