The Nollywood audition room has moved from Ikeja to TikTok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new generation of Gen Z actors is securing film and streaming roles not through traditional drama schools or open casting calls, but through viral 15-second videos shared online. In 2026, these young creators are changing the way talent is discovered in Nigeria\u2019s film industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For years, breaking into Nollywood often depended on personal connections, recommendations from industry insiders, or attending numerous auditions. Today, producers and casting directors are increasingly searching for talent online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBefore, we would audition 400 people in two weeks. Now we DM 20 creators whose videos already have two million views. If they can act for a phone, they can act for a camera,\u201d said Tolu Ajayi, a casting director for Netflix Naija originals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shift has been driven by the growing influence of social media and streaming platforms, which have created new opportunities for young entertainers to showcase their abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to industry observers, actors under 25 are becoming increasingly visible in Nollywood productions, particularly in streaming releases, as platforms seek performers who can connect with younger audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twenty-two-year-old Amina Bello built a following of 4.1 million through POV skits about Nigerian mothers and the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (NEPA). Despite having no previous film credits, she was cast as a second lead in a Prime Video thriller that reached No. 1 in 12 countries in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, 19-year-old Tobi Martins gained popularity through his viral impressions of Lagos bus conductors and has since secured roles in two cinema films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Producers say the appeal is straightforward: Gen Z actors with large online followings bring built-in audiences, relatability, and international visibility that streaming platforms value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Challenge Of Moving From Short Videos To Film<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Despite the opportunities, the transition from social media content creation to professional acting has not been without challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Film productions require weeks of preparation and discipline, unlike short TikTok videos that last only a few seconds. Some early TikTok-to-film actors faced criticism over stiff performances and difficulty adapting to traditional filmmaking processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response, some studios have introduced \u201cset bootcamps\u201d to train emerging actors in areas such as blocking, script interpretation, continuity, and working with a full production crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOn TikTok, I control everything. On set, I had to learn to trust the director and the crew. It\u2019s a team sport,\u201d Bello said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A New Era For Nollywood<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The rise of social media actors has sparked debate among industry veterans. While some believe the trend risks reducing the importance of acting skills and professional training, others see it as another stage in Nollywood\u2019s evolution, similar to the industry\u2019s transition from home videos to cinema and streaming platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What remains clear is that the process of discovering stars has changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Casting is becoming increasingly digital-first, storytelling is adapting to younger audiences, and fame is now measured by a combination of social media influence, box office performance, and streaming success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gen Z actors did not wait for Nollywood to discover them. They created their own platforms, built audiences, and attracted the industry\u2019s attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
