{"id":2901,"date":"2026-08-01T01:18:03","date_gmt":"2026-08-01T00:18:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=2901"},"modified":"2026-08-01T01:18:04","modified_gmt":"2026-08-01T00:18:04","slug":"court-sentences-killers-of-delsu-first-class-student-to-death-after-nine-year-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=2901","title":{"rendered":"Court Sentences Killers Of DELSU First-Class Student To Death After Nine-Year Trial"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Nwankwo Christabel<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly nine years after the gruesome murder of Delta State University (DELSU) first-class student, Elozino Joshuana Ogege, a Delta State High Court has sentenced individuals found guilty of her murder to death, bringing closure to one of the state\u2019s most heartbreaking criminal cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The judgment marks the end of a prolonged legal battle that began after Elozino, a 300-level Mass Communication student known for her outstanding academic performance, was murdered in November 2018 in what investigators described as a ritual-related killing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Human rights activist Kelvin Ejumudo, who announced the judgment, praised the Delta State Solicitor-General and his legal team, the Nigeria Police Force, Delta State Command, the Human Rights Congress, media organisations, human rights advocates, and Nigerians who consistently demanded justice throughout the trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ejumudo also disclosed that the herbalist allegedly linked to the crime died in custody while awaiting trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to him, investigators alleged that the herbalist had instructed the convicted persons to obtain human body parts for ritual purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Describing the judgment as a landmark victory, Ejumudo said the outcome demonstrated that \u201cjustice delayed is not justice denied,\u201d noting that the persistence of prosecutors and public support ultimately ensured accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reacting to the verdict, Isoko-based lawyer Duncan Afahokor described the ruling as \u201cjustice at last,\u201d adding that the judgment should serve as a strong warning against ritual killings and other violent crimes targeting innocent individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within the DELSU community, students and alumni welcomed the verdict while remembering Elozino as a brilliant scholar whose promising future was tragically cut short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many said the judgment brings some measure of comfort to her family, although it cannot erase the pain caused by her death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case remains one of the most widely discussed incidents in the university\u2019s history, prompting renewed calls for improved student safety, stronger law enforcement, and continued efforts to combat ritual-related crimes across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As news of the court\u2019s decision spread, tributes poured in on social media, with many Nigerians describing the judgment as a victory for justice and a reminder that perseverance in the pursuit of accountability can eventually prevail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Nwankwo Christabel Nearly nine years after the gruesome murder of Delta State University (DELSU) first-class student, Elozino Joshuana Ogege, a Delta State High Court has sentenced individuals found guilty of her murder to death, bringing closure to one of the state\u2019s most heartbreaking criminal cases.
