Long before the red-roofed buildings and dusty footpaths of Campus 1 became familiar territory to thousands of students, the land on which Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, stands was already quietly shaping the intellectual destiny of the Niger Delta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story of what is today known as DELSU began before Nigeria gained independence in 1960, when the institution operated as a Government Teacher Training College, offering the Grade II Certificate, a qualification designed to produce classroom teachers for colonial-era schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a modest beginning, but one with a clear purpose: to educate educators for a region with limited access to formal learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That purpose deepened with time. The institution later became a College of Education, awarding the Nigerian Certificate of Education (N.C.E.) from 1971 to 1985.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For fourteen years, the college produced teachers who spread across Bendel State and beyond, with Campus 1 serving as the centre of this early mission of teacher development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Period Of Expansion And Affiliation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The institution later expanded through affiliations with the University of Benin, Benin City, and Temple University in the United States, offering degree and postgraduate programmes up to the early 1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the first time, students in Abraka could obtain internationally recognised qualifications without leaving the community, marking a significant transformation in the institution\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, political changes altered the institution\u2019s trajectory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the creation of Bendel State in 1976, Bendel State University, Ekpoma, was established in 1980. The College eventually became the Faculty of Education of Bendel State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By 1985, the institution had been fully integrated into the university as one of its campuses. Campus 1, which had once existed primarily as a teacher training centre, became part of a larger university system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Birth Of Delta State University<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The final transformation came after the creation of Edo and Delta States in August 1991.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the conversion of the Bendel State University main campus at Ekpoma into Edo State University, the need arose for an independent university in Delta State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 30, 1992, the then Executive Governor of Delta State, Olorogun Felix Ibru, established Delta State University, Abraka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The university began operations with five foundational faculties: Agriculture, Arts, Education, Science, and Social Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The establishment of DELSU expanded access to higher education for residents of Delta State, particularly in teacher training and related disciplines, with Campus 1 becoming the foundation of the new university system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Campus 1 Today<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Today, Campus 1, also known as Site 1, maintains a character distinct from other parts of the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The campus houses the Institute of Education, University Transit Lodge, Senior Staff Club, staff quarters, sports ground, Canon Mason Hall of Residence for male students, Delta State University Staff Schools (primary and secondary), Works and Services Department, Physical Planning Department, and DELSU Investment Limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investment arm includes the University Printing Press, Science Equipment Centre, Bakery and Water Factory, and DELSU Radio Station FM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Departments such as Guidance and Counselling, Music, and Technical Education still hold lectures on the campus, maintaining a direct connection with the institution\u2019s original mission of training teachers, shaping minds, and building communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Living Archive Of Educational Transformation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

From a colonial teacher training ground to a full-fledged university campus, DELSU Campus 1 has experienced several phases of transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like many Nigerian public universities, the institution has faced challenges including funding constraints and disruptions caused by industrial actions. These issues have affected maintenance and resources across many state-owned universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite these challenges, Campus 1 has remained a living archive of the educational journey of the Niger Delta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may not house the Vice-Chancellor\u2019s office or the university\u2019s largest facilities, but it carries something perhaps more valuable \u2014 the memory of where the story of Delta State University began.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
