It is a sport involving two contestants who strike each other with their fists.

Boxing is a sport that allows you to build muscles while developing precision, self-control, self-confidence, agility, fighting skills and strategies.

Boxers are matched by weight and ability and typically wear padded gloves.

Miss Gift Otugbo, a 400-level Physiology student of Delta state university Abraka said boxing started losing its popularity in the early 2000s.

During that period, football gained tremendous support through increased television coverage, sponsorship, and fan engagement, particularly with the growing popularity of the English Premier League.

As a result, boxing received less media attention, fewer major events were promoted, and public interest gradually shifted toward football and other forms of modern sports entertainment.

Sports fans say one of the reasons boxing has lost some of its popularity is the rise of other forms of sports entertainment.

Football has become the dominant sport in many countries, while basketball and mixed martial arts have also attracted large numbers of young followers.

Social media and digital platforms have further changed the way audiences consume sports, with many preferring fast-paced, constantly updated content over long build-ups to boxing matches.

Another factor affecting boxing’s popularity is the reduced visibility of local boxing competitions.

In many areas, boxing events are no longer regularly promoted, and young people have fewer opportunities to witness live fights or learn about the sport’s history and values.

Without strong grassroots support, the sport struggles to produce new stars who can inspire the next generation.

Some sports analysts also believe that poor funding, weak promotion and limited investment in boxing development have contributed to its decline in public attention.

In Nigeria today, football has become the heartbeat of sports conversation, dominating viewing centres, social media debates, newspaper pages and radio discussions.

From English Premier League fixtures to Champions League clashes and transfer rumours, fans have no shortage of football stories to follow daily.

But as the nation’s love for football continues to grow, boxing is gradually being pushed out of the everyday sports conversation, leaving it with less attention, fewer loyal followers and a shrinking place in the country’s sporting culture.

Miss Palmer favour, a 100-level mass communication student of Delta State University Abraka said she believes boxing still has a future in Nigeria, but it will require deliberate efforts to revive the sport and with the right support from government, sports authorities, and private investors, the sport can once again become competitive and attract a new generation of fans.

Despite this decline, boxing remains an important sport with a rich history and lasting cultural significance.

It continues to produce skilled athletes and memorable contests, even if they do not receive the same widespread attention as in the past.

Obiebi Dickson Ejabofo, a computer science education student of Delta State University, Abraka said if the current trend continues, boxing may become even less popular than it is today.

The sport could experience reduced media coverage and a shortage of young athletes choosing boxing as a career.

Supporters of the sport argue that boxing still has the power to regain its place if proper investment is made in talent development, media coverage and youth participation.

Although boxing may no longer dominate public discussions the way it once did, it has not disappeared.

Rather, it stands at a crossroads, challenged by modern trends but still holding the potential for revival.

For many long-time fans, boxing is more than just a sport; it is a symbol of resilience, discipline and determination.

With the right support and renewed interest, the sport may yet return to the spotlight it once proudly occupied.

By Nancy Otugbo Across many communities, boxing is no longer discussed with the same excitement it once generated.
