Years Of Silence Ends As Delta Moves To Revive DELSU Senate Building

By Anighoro Mathias

After standing abandoned for 23 years, the Senate/Administrative Building of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, is set for a new lease of life as the Delta State Government begins the process of completing the long-delayed project.

The state government recently invited qualified contractors to bid for the completion of the building following the revocation of the previous contract.

The move fulfils Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s pledge during DELSU’s 17th Convocation Ceremony to ensure the long abandoned structure is completed.

The unfinished building has remained one of the university’s most prominent abandoned projects, symbolising years of stalled development despite its importance to the institution’s administrative operations.

The latest bidding process, initiated through the Delta State Tenders Board under the Ministry of Higher Education, is expected to pave the way for the project’s completion.

Speaking on the development, a lecturer from the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies at Delta State University, Abraka, described the decision to revive the project as a significant step towards strengthening the institution.

“The Senate Building is very crucial to the running of any good university,” the lecturer said, noting that its completion would improve the university’s administrative system and support its overall development.

He also commended Governor Oborevwori’s decision to revive the project, describing it as one of the administration’s notable infrastructure initiatives.

According to the lecturer, one of the key lessons from the prolonged abandonment is the need for proper monitoring of public projects.

“There should be thorough follow up on every project.

“Without close supervision, it is difficult for projects to be completed as expected,” he said.

He further urged governments and contractors to prioritise the timely completion of public projects, stressing that such projects contribute not only to the development of educational institutions but also to the wider society.

“If you are given any project, concentrate on it and finish it because it contributes to the development of the school and, generally, to society,” he added.

Governor Oborevwori had earlier expressed dissatisfaction over the prolonged delay in completing the senate building and directed that the original contract be revoked to allow for a fresh procurement process.

The invitation for new bids represents the latest effort to finally deliver one of DELSU’s most anticipated infrastructure projects.

The Senate Building is expected to serve as the university’s central administrative complex upon completion, providing improved office accommodation and enhancing the coordination of academic and administrative activities.

The project also forms part of the Delta State Government’s wider infrastructure renewal programme aimed at improving public institutions across the state.

For many students, staff and alumni who have watched the building remain unfinished for over two decades, the government’s latest action represents renewed hope that one of the university’s most important projects will finally be completed, ending 23 years of uncertainty and neglect.

<p
