Traders in Abraka\u2019s commercial district expressed mixed reactions as the university academic session drew to a close in Delta State University, Abraka, with some predicting lower sales while others said the slowdown is temporary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many shop owners and market traders said business usually falls during the holidays as students pack up and leave campus, reducing demand for food, clothing and telecom services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The drop in patronage, they explained, translates directly into lower daily turnover and makes it harder to meet routine expenses such as rent, utilities and restocking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is usually dry, no customer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We can stay from morning till evening with nothing, praying that customers should come so we can do something,\u201d said Ms. Joy Emakpor, who runs a cyber caf\u00e9 near the university gate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emakpor noted that her business model is built around student patronage, with peak periods clustered around lecture days, examination weeks and registration periods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe rely heavily on student customers, so the end of session hits us hard,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some traders, however, said the break also brings short-term opportunities that partly offset the downturn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several retailers and landlords told reporters that the influx of parents and visiting relatives during closing and graduation events temporarily boosted sales and short-term rentals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These visitors, though fewer in number than the student population, often spend more per transaction on items such as souvenirs, tailoring, food and accommodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Resumption is awaited with optimism that business will bounce back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traders along the main commercial strip said they are using the holiday to repair shops, renegotiate supplies and plan promotional offers targeted at returning students and incoming freshers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are getting used to the system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“School will be closing soon but there are still some final-year students working on their projects,\u201d said one shop owner, adding that such students still require services and may provide some income during the holiday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He explained that project-related needs\u2014printing, binding, research materials, internet access and transportation\u2014keep a steady trickle of customers coming even when lecture halls are empty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo, we can benefit from those works that they will do for that period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There\u2019s no fear again,\u201d he said.Veteran vendor Mrs. Sussana, who owns a restaurant near the university\u2019s small gate, emphasised the importance of saving during peak periods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She described her approach as budgeting for the lean months by setting aside a portion of daily earnings when sales are highest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is what you make when there is a boom that you eat when school is not in session,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She expects the new session to bring freshmen, noting that many new students do not yet have cooking facilities and therefore buy food from vendors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to her, freshers often rely on affordable, ready-to-eat meals while they settle into hostel life, locate kitchens or purchase cooking equipment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This creates a predictable surge in demand for food vendors in the first few weeks of resumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Business owners advising newcomers urged anyone planning to rely on student patronage to understand the seasonal nature of demand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They cautioned against assuming that daily sales will remain constant throughout the year, pointing out that holidays and examination periods can disrupt the academic calendar and affect cash flow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They recommended asking questions to learn peak and slow periods before investing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prospective traders were advised to speak with existing business owners, campus administrators and student leaders to map out the academic calendar, identify high-traffic zones and estimate realistic revenue projections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such groundwork, they said, reduces the risk of overcommitting capital during periods when student presence and therefore spending is at its lowest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
