Following the successful cultivation and harvest of cucumbers at the Centre for Entrepreneurship Studies (CES) demonstration farm, students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, have commenced the marketing and sale of the produce as part of their practical entrepreneurship training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exercise, which is a continuation of the CES agricultural programme, requires students to sell the harvested cucumbers, keep accurate records of their sales, and submit reports to their instructors for assessment. The initiative is designed to expose students not only to crop production but also to the business aspect of agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students were grouped into marketing teams and assigned the responsibility of identifying buyers, negotiating prices, promoting the produce, and documenting their transactions. The exercise aims to equip them with practical knowledge of customer relations, financial record-keeping, profit calculation, and basic business management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking after participating in the sales exercise, Chioma, a 300-level student offering CES 311, said the experience had changed her perception of entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing the cucumbers was only the beginning. Selling them has taught us how difficult it can be to attract customers, negotiate prices, and keep proper financial records. It has shown us that entrepreneurship involves both production and marketing, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another student, Emmanuel, explained that interacting with customers gave him confidence in communication and marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were asked to sell the cucumbers and account for every sale. We learned how to convince buyers about the quality of our products and how to record every transaction. It was a practical experience that cannot be learned fully in the classroom, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the course instructors, the students are expected to prepare comprehensive reports detailing the quantity of cucumbers sold, the revenue generated, challenges encountered during the sales process, and lessons learned from the exercise. The reports will form part of the continuous assessment for the course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some students noted that while they experienced challenges such as price negotiations and competition from local vegetable sellers, the exercise helped them understand the realities of running an agribusiness. Others said they were encouraged by the positive response from buyers who praised the freshness and quality of the cucumbers produced on the university farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Centre for Entrepreneurship Studies explained that the practical sales exercise is intended to bridge the gap between production and business management by exposing students to the complete agricultural value chain\u2014from planting and harvesting to marketing and financial accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As students conclude the exercise and submit their sales reports, the programme continues to demonstrate DELSU\u2019s commitment to producing graduates with practical entrepreneurial skills capable of creating employment opportunities and contributing to Nigeria\u2019s agricultural and economic development.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
