Students of Delta State University (DELSU) are currently sitting the second semester examinations, following a lead-up period marked by anxiety over preparation time and the pressure of multiple academic demands converging at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across faculties, the mood on campus shifted noticeably in the weeks before exams began. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lecture halls that once had relaxed attendance filled to capacity as students scrambled to catch up on missed classes, while hostels and reading areas became scenes of late-night reading sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to students interviewed around campus, a major source of the earlier unease was the pace at which coursework was being concluded ahead of the examination timetable, with some students expressing concern about being examined on topics they felt were rushed through. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coursework has since been completed across board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We were worried the timetable was out before everything had been covered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was stressful,” says a 200-level student who spoke on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another student, a 300-level Mass Communication undergraduate, describes the period leading up to exams as one of the most demanding in the academic calendar, citing the clustering of continuous assessment (CA) tests, seminar presentations, project defenses, and take-home assignments within the same short stretch of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It wasn’t just about reading for exams. We were also submitting assignments, defending projects, and writing CA tests all at once. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There was no breathing space,” the student says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The university’s library and designated reading centers reportedly recorded a marked increase in student turnout in the days before exams began, a common indicator of last-minute academic preparation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Popular off-campus reading spots and study groups also saw higher patronage, according to students who frequent them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond academics, some students linked the earlier anxiety to broader concerns, including the cost of last-minute materials such as photocopied notes and past questions, as well as the emotional toll of balancing exam pressure with personal and financial responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 100 Level Coordinator, speaking on the tension in the lead-up to exams, acknowledged the pressure students were under and urged calm and diligence, encouraging first-year students in particular to stay committed to their preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With examinations now in progress, students say the focus has shifted to getting through the papers, though some maintain that clearer communication around exam schedules in future would help reduce tension in subsequent semesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If lecturers can clarify the areas to focus on earlier next time, it will help reduce the tension,” says one final-year student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
