Workers have begun installing fiber optic cables around Site 2 of the Campus of Delta State University, a project aimed at providing stable Wi-Fi for students and campus residents who said they have been billed for internet service that remains inactive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to students and hostel residents, Wi-Fi charges are included in hostel bills, but the service has been inactive for an extended period, prompting complaints from students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Jerry Ogum, an ICT staff member, confirmed the installation in a chat with our reporter and explained the rationale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe unavailability of a stable Wi-Fi connection has caused students to pay for extra data costs,\u201d Ogum said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that the new network would support students academically as university education advances technologically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ogum said fiber optic technology uses light signals to transmit data at high speeds, unlike traditional copper cables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once completed, students can expect faster downloads, smoother video streaming for online lectures, and more reliable access to e-learning platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the ICT personnel did not comment on billing or service fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hostel residents said they have seen Wi-Fi routers installed around the premises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maxwell Agunze, a Mass Communication student who resides in Abraka Hall, said workers had been seen carrying cables but returned periodically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agunze expressed hope the project would be completed soon, adding that many students are frustrated by the lack of service despite being billed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A student in Ethiope Hall, who asked not to be named, said Wi-Fi is charged in hostel bills every semester but has never been usable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI still have to buy data with my own money,\u201d the student said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The student expressed hope the installation would make the service functional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In comparison, fibre optic connection has already been completed in Site 3 of the Abraka campus although students said access has only been made available to a few faculties and the Ultra Modern Mega Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The limited rollout in Site 3 has raised questions among Site 2 students about whether the new installation will serve all students or only select facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blessing Efe, a student who reside in Ethiope Hall, observed that some course materials are available only online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are paying for Wi-Fi, so we should get what we are paying for,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI hope this project is completed and not abandoned like what happened on Site 3.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Media Conversation reports that internet access is now essential for students beyond lectures and downloads and the university\u2019s move to improve internet access and connectivity on campus could ease their hassle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the age of jet-speed communication, many students rely on departmental WhatsApp group chats to learn class times, assignment deadlines and announcements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without internet, a student could miss lectures or assignment deadline simply because they could not surf the internet with their phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This situation shows how deeply internet connectivity has become part of university education across DELSU campuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was once a convenience is now a requirement for academic participation. Students who cannot afford steady data plans are often left behind, not because they are unwilling to learn, but because they lack the means to stay informed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, former Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, has condemned the reported declaration of the seat of Udu State Constituency representative, Collins Egbetamah, as vacant by the Delta State House of Assembly, describing the action as unconstitutional and a violation of due process.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
