A 28-year-old JUPEB student identified simply as Jeremiah has been named the primary suspect in a shocking case of alleged fee diversion that has left dozens of students at a Nigerian tertiary institution facing academic disruptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to investigations, Jeremiah allegedly approached multiple students in the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) programme, offering to pay their school fees on their behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SP Bright Edafe, the Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command, disclosed that Jeremiah reportedly collected a total of \u20a615,000,000, with each of the 61 affected students paying approximately \u20a6250,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking a video posted on his verified TikTok account, Edafe said the victims claimed that Jeremiah issued informal receipts and gave verbal assurances that the money would be remitted to the school authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the PPRO did not mention the name of the school, he alleged that the fees were never paid into the official accounts of the institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The affected students discovered the fraud only when they attempted to complete registration, access examination results, or proceed with academic activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that the victims incurred late registration penalties, were barred from writing exams, and faced threats of expulsion due to outstanding fees. Some were forced to urgently source additional funds to regularise their status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He was trusted because he was one of us,” a source close to the matter said, noting that Jeremiah\u2019s familiarity with school processes as a JUPEB student made him appear credible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JUPEB is an intensive one-year foundational programme designed to prepare students for direct entry into 200-level in Nigerian universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The alleged scam has reportedly caused significant distress within the student community, where financial pressures are already high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the matter. If found guilty, Jeremiah could face criminal charges including theft by conversion, obtaining money under false pretences, and breach of trust, in line with relevant sections of the Nigerian Criminal Code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

School management has not yet issued an official statement, but students and parents are being strongly advised to always make payments directly through official channels such as approved bank transfers, Remita platforms, and to insist on proper receipts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a separate development, experts have called on Nigerians to embrace these technologies with open hearts.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experts specifically urged students to embrace AI technologies as tools for learning and innovation rather than seeing them as threats to their future careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
