Heavy flooding has destroyed farmlands in several communities, leaving many local farmers counting huge losses and raising concerns about food security. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The floods, caused by days of persistent rainfall and overflowing rivers, have submerged hectares of farmland planted with maize, cassava, rice, vegetables, and yam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a visit to the affected communities, many farmers described the situation as heartbreaking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crops that were close to harvest were washed away, while others remained submerged in water. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Farmers said they had invested their savings in seeds, fertilizer, labour, and other farm inputs, hoping for a profitable harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I have lost almost everything,” said a local maize farmer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The flood covered my farm overnight. I don’t know how I will recover or feed my family.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agricultural experts warn that if immediate support is not provided, the flooding could reduce food production, increase food prices, and worsen hunger in many parts of the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Floods also damage rural roads, making it difficult for farmers to transport whatever produce remains to local markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Livestock farmers have also been affected. Some reported the loss of poultry, goats, and sheep, while fish farmers said floodwaters washed away fish from their ponds, resulting in severe financial losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chairman of the local Farmers’ Association appealed to government agencies and humanitarian organizations to provide emergency assistance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He called for the distribution of improved seedlings, fertilizers, pesticides, and financial support to enable farmers to return to their farms once the floodwaters recede.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agricultural extension officers advised farmers to adopt climate-smart farming practices, including improved drainage systems, raised beds, flood-tolerant crop varieties, and better weather monitoring. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also encouraged farmers to insure their farms against natural disasters where possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents urged the government to construct and maintain drainage channels, dredge rivers, and improve flood-control infrastructure to reduce the impact of future flooding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Environmental experts added that poor waste disposal and blocked drainage systems often worsen flooding in many communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the destruction, many farmers remain hopeful that with timely intervention, they can recover before the next planting season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They emphasized that agriculture remains the backbone of rural livelihoods and called on all stakeholders to support affected farming communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As climate change continues to increase the frequency of extreme weather events, experts believe that stronger investment in agricultural resilience, early warning systems, and rural infrastructure will be essential to protect farmers and ensure sustainable food production in Nigeria.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
