Established in 1978, the union seeks to safeguard the interests, welfare and career progression of lecturers.

ASUU is known for engaging the Federal Government on matters relating to educational funding, staff remuneration, university autonomy and working conditions in the university system. Over the years, the union has embarked on several industrial actions to draw attention to persistent challenges and funding shortfalls in public universities.

Recently, our reporter secured an exclusive interview with the Chairman of ASUU, Delta State University Branch, Comrade Paul Opone.

Speaking on the union’s objectives, ASUU officials said the organisation maintains a common goal across Nigerian universities: protecting members’ welfare while ensuring that universities remain conducive for staff and students. The union said its advocacy contributed to the establishment of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and the implementation of needs assessment projects in public universities. It stated that over 95 per cent of educational interventions in the institutions are reportedly funded through TETFund.

Read Also; 28-Years-Old Man Swindles JUPEB Students, Diverts N15 Million School Fees

The union said an agreement signed in 2025 has not been fully implemented in federal universities, while state-owned institutions, including Delta State University, are yet to adopt it entirely. ASUU described the situation as a concern affecting the morale and productivity of academic staff.

To address the issues, the union said it continues to engage governments, university councils and administrators through dialogue. ASUU stated that documents containing its demands and recommendations have been submitted to the Delta State Government, and it hopes the agreement will be implemented.

Beyond welfare advocacy, ASUU said it supports educational development through sponsorship programmes. Through TETFund, the union sponsors lecturers undertaking master’s and PhD programmes, and also provides scholarships for students.

According to the union, the Delta State University branch awarded scholarships to 11 students last year, while the national body supported two students in the institution. ASUU said education remains a priority area.

Read Also: OPINION: Agriculture, Nigeria’s Fading Goldmine

On public perceptions of industrial action, ASUU said it should be regarded as a ‘trouble-shooting’ body rather than a ‘trouble-making’ union. The leadership said strike action is adopted only after sustained attempts at dialogue with government.

The union explained that warnings and negotiations usually precede any strike declaration. It said industrial action is taken when it considers that government has not responded positively.

ASUU also recalled initiatives introduced to strengthen the education sector, including programmes initiated during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo aimed at advancing research and innovation in Nigerian universities.

The union called on government to adopt modern approaches to educational development. It expressed concern over what it described as a lack of patriotism among some political leaders, noting that many final-year research projects remain unused in university libraries instead of being developed into practical innovations.

Reaffirming its position, ASUU said no nation can achieve meaningful growth without significant investment in education, adding that the sector remains a drive.

The author, Christabel Diedermise, is a 200 level student of Mass Communication at Delta State University, Abraka.

By Christabel Diedemise The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is a Nigerian labour union that represents academic staff in public universities nationwide.
