Friends and
associates took his money while putting his name on their accounts. The man
who invented a $30 billion universe spent his last years waging battles with
courts and medical expenses. His reputation was intact, but his bank account
wasn’t, and that story got me thinking about the proverb: “A good name is
better than riches.”

“Better the name than precious ointment; and better the day of one’s death than
the day of his birth.” – Proverbs 22:1. This is a verse I learned as a child, and I
think our elders were right when they said reputation is everything, because a
good name means trust, honour, and access to things money can’t buy.

Reputation brings peace and legacy. I think a character is a reserve of
inestimable value that never goes out of style.

However, Stan Lee’s example demonstrates the extent to which such wisdom
may fall short when life is on the line.

READ ALSO: Filtered Lives, Real Damage: The Hidden Cost of Social Media For Gen Z Nigeria

This is because respect is potent, but in my humble opinion, it wasn’t his saving
grace. So here I am: it’s not all about a good name; money does matter.

To me, a good name equals reputation, while money is cash and the power to
solve problems. They are both important, but not equally important when life is
at stake. I have witnessed cash pay school charges for children who have no
sponsor, and I have seen it cover hospital charges when doctors insist a deposit
must be made first. I have also watched it pay rent when landlords are not okay
with “good character.” Honesty does not stop poverty, and hunger does not
negotiate because you are respected.

In a weak economy, I think money is the buffer between you and disaster. For
medicine is a shield, and money is medicine.

Stan Lee owned the shield, for he was a celebrity with millions of fans around
the world, but he had no control over the money when the exploiters came.
There was no better name to cover for him, for his life was saved by money, and
his bills couldn’t be paid by a good name but by money. I’ve seen that in
systems: liquidity moves quicker than reputation. So a man with a reputation
can live for years waiting for money, while a man with money can build a
reputation right now. Time is the difference between life and death, and money
is time.

Money is also an option that reputation cannot provide. I have witnessed good
people with good names get glorified and then head home to worry about
transport, while a man with money, even with a battered reputation, can pay
staff and build schools. Communities can criticise him, but they still use what
he built, because praise is rare, but cash has a real impact. If a man is wrongly
accused, he may hire expensive attorneys to defend him, and if a man’s name is
good but he does not have much money, he may lose everything through the
case. Options cost a fortune, and money buys them.

READ ALSO: The Dangerous Culture Of “Mind Your Business”

Realising priorities means food, shelter, and safety come first. You can’t defend
your reputation if you’re dead, and if you’re evicted, you don’t leave a legacy at
all. This is not my argument for fraud, but my plea for urgency, because nobody
wants swimming lessons when drowning; he wants a rope, and money is that
rope. You can build your name when you’re safe, and even at 95, Stan Lee
didn’t flinch when he lost his fortune, but if he had protected his finances in the
same way, then I think he would have had a different end.

I will agree with the elders that they are not wrong at all—Proverbs 22:1 is
wisdom, and there are some things money cannot buy back. A good name is
long-term capital, because without trust, investors walk away, and a rich man
with no name lives in fear with no peace. Money may not buy sleep, but a good
name gives you a legacy, for money can end, and markets crash, but honesty
will last long after you’re gone and it will be passed to your children. That is the
immortality money cannot buy.

So I’m not going to kill one and pick the other; I’m going to set the order. First,
make money legally and aggressively by learning skills that are in demand,
creating businesses that address problems, and investing early. A lack of money
will put your good name to the test every day with sickness, school fees, and
rent, and weakness will lead to compromise.

Secondly, defend your name while collecting income, and I say: don’t cut
corners that damage trust, and don’t get rich on lies, because an all-star without
a name is a player nobody believes.

I need money for oxygen, and I need a good name for my reputation—oxygen
keeps me alive, and a good name helps me live well. In an emergency, oxygen
is most important, and reputation can be rehabilitated after, but death cannot.
Money is better, not because a good name is worthless, but because money
keeps you alive long enough for your name to matter, and a dead man has no
reputation, while a broke man cannot fund his legacy.

This is what I teach students: do right, do good, maintain a good reputation, and
learn Stan Lee’s lesson with me. Guard money as you guard your name: take
advisors, read contracts, make money, and keep the name. If life forces it,
though, I would take the one that keeps me breathing, for it is only a living man
who can make a name to be remembered.

Ese Ikefe, a 200-level student of Journalism and Media Studies at Delta State
University, Abraka, can be reached via dominionikefe@gmail.com.

By Ese Ikefe Legendary Spider-Man/Iron Man creator Stan Lee was a victim of elder fraud inLos Angeles, United States of America, in 2018 after his wife died.
