Especially students no dey buy plenty again like before, and even to recover our capital na problem.”

Another foodstuff trader, Mr. Samuel Ovie, said many customers now buy food in smaller quantities because their income can no longer meet the rising cost of food.

Ovie said: “Before, people could buy a full bag of rice, garri or other foodstuffs.

“Now they ask for smaller quantities because the money they have is not enough.

“Instead of buying in bulk, they buy small quantities of different food items.

“That has affected many households and our business.”

A local farmer, Madam Joyce, who cultivates plantain and maize in Abraka, told Media Conversation that the rising cost of fertiliser, herbicides, improved seedlings and farm labour has made food production more expensive.

“We spend too much on everything now, If you calculate the cost of clearing land, planting, weeding and harvesting, you will see that farmers are struggling. Many of us cannot produce enough because of these high costs.”

Students of Delta State University, Abraka, also said the increase in food prices has affected their ability to feed properly.

A 200-level student, Esther Atuma, said her monthly allowance is no longer enough to meet her feeding needs.

“I now buy food in smaller quantities because my allowance can no longer cover what it used to when I was in 100l”, Atuma recounted.

The residents appealed to the Delta State Government and relevant agricultural agencies to subsidies farm inputs, rehabilitate rural roads, improve transportation and storage facilities and provide affordable loans to farmers to boost food production and reduce the cost of food crops in the state.

By Divinefavour EgereResidents of Abraka in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State have expressed concern over the persistent rise in the prices of food crops, saying the situation has made it increasingly difficult for many households to afford adequate meals.
