Student leaders at Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, have called for greater transparency and accountability in student governance as preparations begin for the next Students’ Union Government (SUG) elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The call was made during a student meeting held on campus, where representatives from various faculties discussed challenges affecting student representation and participation in university politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting provided an opportunity for students to share their views on leadership, governance, and the future of student representation within the institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the discussions, concerns were raised about communication gaps between elected officials and students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many participants noted that students are often not adequately informed about decisions affecting their welfare and academic activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They emphasized the need for stronger engagement between student leaders and the students they represent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several student representatives highlighted the importance of responsible leadership and urged aspiring candidates to focus on policies that address students’ welfare, academic concerns, and campus development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They stressed that student leaders should remain accessible and accountable to those who elected them into office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I represent my faculty at the student level. I foster peace, unity, and the welfare of students. It is my responsibility to ensure that the association continues to grow and to nurture student leaders at both the faculty and SUG levels to represent us effectively,” said Comr. Oghenetegiri Akpovogbeta, President of the Faculty of Social Sciences, DELSU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some students who attended the meeting also expressed their expectations for future leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to them, student representatives should maintain regular communication with students, provide updates on important issues, and seek the opinions of students before making major decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A student from the Faculty of Arts who attended the meeting said that transparency is one of the most important qualities expected from any leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The student explained that many students become disappointed when elected officials fail to fulfill campaign promises or provide feedback on issues affecting the student body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many students also expressed their desire for a more inclusive political environment where opinions from different faculties and departments are respected and represented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They argued that every student should have a voice in matters affecting campus life regardless of their faculty, department, or level of study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The university community has witnessed growing interest in student politics in recent months, with potential candidates already engaging students through consultations and awareness campaigns ahead of future elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These activities have encouraged discussions about leadership qualities, accountability, and the responsibilities of elected officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Observers believe that increased participation in campus politics could strengthen democratic values among students while promoting accountability among leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also encouraged fellow students to actively participate in the electoral process by attending political meetings, asking questions, and voting responsibly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As preparations for future elections continue, candidates and elected officials are expected to demonstrate integrity, accountability, and a genuine commitment to serving the interests of students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many students believe that these qualities will play a crucial role in building trust between student leaders and the wider student community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, have expressed mixed views over accommodation conditions in both university-managed and privately owned hostels, with concerns ranging from rising hostel fees and irregular electricity supply to maintenance challenges, while others praised improved security and essential facilities on campus.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
