However, the pressure to rely on these tools varies significantly from person to person.

Okoye Precious Chidera, a 200-level Biochemistry student, noted that she uses AI to complete assignments and conduct research, though she does not do so frequently. She explained that she has never felt pressured to use the technology.

READ ALSO: DELSU Floats ICT Training to Enhance Digital Literacy, Administration

On the other hand, the demand for quick results can push some students toward automation.

Aigbenomen Okesabor, a student in the Software Engineering department, admitted that the pressure to use AI to keep up with peers is real, but only “if it’s urgent”.

This highlights a growing trend where AI is treated as an emergency backup for tight deadlines rather than a constant requirement.

Despite the different levels of pressure, there is a shared excitement regarding how AI can speed up academic tasks. Rather than fearing that machines will replace human skills, these science students focus on the immediate benefits.

Precious pointed out that AI provides a smoother learning experience because it helps accelerate her workload. She also added that the technology provides a “faster and easier understanding of certain things”.

Aigbenomen agreed, emphasizing that AI serves as a catalyst for fast thinking. He noted that as a science student, his activities require him to brainstorm quickly, making him more excited than anxious about the technology.

While he acknowledged that human skills are important, he stated that one “can’t put all my eggs in one basket”.

READ ALSO: NADESSTU Visits DELSU New Dean of Students, Pledges Support

However, this enthusiasm hits a wall when it comes to the accuracy of AI-generated content. In the scientific field, where precision is everything, trust in AI is surprisingly low.

Precious stated that she only trusts AI data and summaries about 60 percent of the time. She warned that she cannot generally trust AI because it is prone to making mistakes.

Aigbenomen’s trust in the technology is even lower, sitting at just 30 percent. He expressed specific frustration with how AI condenses information, noting that he does not like using AI for summaries.

Because AI relies on collected data, Aigbenomen explained that it “might not pass the information the way I want it to be passed”. This critical view shows that students are highly aware of AI’s limitations and are not blindly accepting its outputs.

When looking toward the future and entering the professional workforce, neither student fears that AI will take over their careers. Instead, they view it strictly as a subordinate tool.

Precious believes AI will serve as a helpful aid, stating that she genuinely thinks it will be an assistant and not a competitor. Because AI is not human, she concluded that “we would always need humans in the workforce”.

Aigbenomen took an even stronger stance on the hierarchy between humans and machines. He stated that AI “can only replace those who are lazy and have no worth”.

Dismissing the idea of AI as a boss or a rival, he concluded that “as of now Ai is a slave to me and can’t even be my assistant”.

Ultimately, the fast rise of AI is undeniable, but the fear of a machine-dominated future is not widespread among these future scientists.

They are adopting the technology to survive academic pressures and brainstorm faster, yet they remain highly critical of its accuracy. For now, students are choosing to master AI as a tool, ensuring that human intelligence remains firmly in control.

By Praise Ejiro-Eghrudje The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into daily academic life is transforming how university students approach their studies.
