{"id":491,"date":"2026-07-09T15:31:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T14:31:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=491"},"modified":"2026-07-09T15:31:18","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T14:31:18","slug":"unmasked-scores-of-students-converge-as","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=491","title":{"rendered":"Unmasked: Scores Of Students Converge As"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u200eBy Ejiroghene Joseph<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 100 students and lecturers of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, gathered at the 500-Seaters Hall, Faculty of Education, Campus III, on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, for a sensitization programme titled \u201cUNMASKED: The Truth About Social Vices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event was organized to educate young people on the dangers of social vices and the importance of gender education in building a responsible and progressive society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200eThe programme attracted students from different faculties, academic staff, student leaders, and invited guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants were encouraged to embrace positive values, make informed life choices, and become ambassadors of change within and outside the university community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200eAmong the dignitaries present were the President of the Students\u2019 Union Government (SUG), Amb. Comr. Kingsley O. Dumeje, and Comr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Uwafor Happiness Chiamaka, Director of Humanitarian Services and Value Orientation, who organized the event alongside lecturers, leaders, student representatives, and other stakeholders committed to promoting a safe and healthy learning environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200eDelivering the keynote address, Dr. Mrs. Hilda Olele, Director of Gender and Development Studies, highlighted the critical role of gender education in addressing social challenges and fostering national development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She explained that gender education goes beyond discussions about men and women, describing it as a process that teaches equality, mutual respect, human rights, and social responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200eAccording to Dr. Olele, many societal problems stem from ignorance, discrimination, and a lack of understanding about the rights and responsibilities of individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said gender education equips people with the knowledge needed to appreciate diversity, respect one another, and build healthier relationships within educational institutions and society at large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200eShe warned that social vices such as cultism, drug abuse, examination malpractice, cybercrime, prostitution, internet fraud, bullying, and sexual harassment can lead to academic failure, damaged reputations, legal consequences, and emotional distress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She urged students to remain focused on their academic goals and resist temptations that could jeopardize their future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200eThroughout the programme, speakers stressed the need for students to understand the long-term consequences of social vices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cultism, they noted, has continued to claim lives and create insecurity in many institutions, while drug abuse has negatively affected the health, academic performance, and social relationships of numerous youths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200eExamination malpractice was also highlighted as a serious threat to educational standards, while cybercrime was discussed as a dangerous attempt to seek quick wealth through illegal online activities. Speakers cautioned that such acts carry severe legal penalties and damage trust in digital platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200eThe event also featured discussions on the role of families, educational institutions, religious organizations, and community leaders in shaping the behaviour of young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants agreed that addressing social vices requires collective effort and continuous engagement from all sectors of society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200eStudents who attended the programme actively participated in question-and-answer sessions, sharing their views on the challenges facing youths and suggesting possible solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many expressed concern about the growing influence of social media on young people\u2019s behaviour and emphasized the need for greater awareness campaigns on responsible digital citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200eSeveral lecturers commended the organizers for addressing issues that directly affect students\u2019 welfare and academic success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They encouraged the university community to sustain such initiatives through regular seminars, workshops, and mentorship programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200eOne of the key messages delivered during the event was the need for students to become agents of positive change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than merely avoiding social vices, attendees were encouraged to actively promote ethical behaviour among their peers and contribute to creating a culture of integrity and responsibility on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200eA memorable highlight of the event was an award presentation ceremony held to recognize outstanding contributions and participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organisers said that rewarding good conduct and active participation can help reinforce the values promoted during the
