The Agricultural Farm at Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Site II, continues to provide practical training for students despite facing challenges such as inadequate manpower, poor electricity supply, insufficient machinery, and inadequate funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A visit to the university farm showed workers actively engaged in aquaculture and crop farming activities, in which the facility serves as a practical training centre for students studying Agronomy, Fisheries, Aquaculture, and other agriculture related courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during the visit, a farm worker, Davison, popularly known as “Oracle,” said the aquaculture section trains four fish species, which are Clarias (African giant catfish), Red Tilapia, and Grass Carp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further explained that the farm provides students with experience that complements classroom learning, “We usually organise training for the students, and this semester we have carried out several practical activities for them,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Davison, students are trained in fish feeding, pond maintenance, water quality management, and crop production to prepare them for real life agricultural practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the visit, several fish ponds and crop sections were observed, with workers carrying out routine maintenance around the farm, however, only two workers were seen handling the daily operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Davison complained about inadequate manpower as one of the major challenges affecting the farm’s productivity, noting that the limited workforce struggles to meet the facility’s growing demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another worker, Ovirirri, called for more machinery and equipment to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the farm, “The work is very stressful for only two people, Machinery makes work easier, but we still lack some necessary equipment and stable electricity,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also added that constant electricity is essential for pumping water into fish tanks and maintaining healthy conditions for fish productio, according to him, unstable power supply disrupts daily operations and prevents some farm equipment from functioning effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workers appealed for an increase in funding the farm, improved power supply, additional machinery, and more workers to strengthen the farm’s operations and enhance practical learning opportunities for students.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
