{"id":518,"date":"2026-07-09T17:05:59","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T16:05:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=518"},"modified":"2026-07-10T21:50:18","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T20:50:18","slug":"518","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=518","title":{"rendered":"Rising House Rents Put Pressure on DELSU Students in Abraka"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By<\/strong> <strong>Prosper<\/strong> <strong>Onuwaje<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, have expressed concern over the sharp increase in accommodation costs in communities surrounding the institution, saying the development is placing significant financial pressure on students and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Findings by <strong><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Media Conversation<\/mark><\/em><\/strong> show that the cost of renting student accommodation in some parts of Abraka has risen from about \u20a6150,000 to as much as \u20a6350,000, representing a substantial increase over previous years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking with our reporter in an interview 25, Peter, a 100-level student of DELSU residing off-campus, said the increase in rent has become a major challenge for many students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe rent keeps increasing every session, and it is becoming difficult for students to afford accommodation close to school. Some of us have to look for cheaper places farther away from campus,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another student, Blessing, also a 100-level student of DELSU, described the situation as stressful, noting that many students now struggle to balance accommodation costs with other academic expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cApart from school fees and textbooks, we now have to worry about paying high rent. It is becoming harder for students and their parents to cope,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some students said the rising rents have forced them to share rooms with multiple occupants or seek accommodation in distant areas where housing is relatively cheaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Property owners and landlords in the university community attribute the increases to rising maintenance costs, inflation, and growing demand for student housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A landlord who spoke on condition of anonymity stated that the cost of building materials, repairs, electricity, and general property maintenance has increased significantly in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite these explanations, students are calling on relevant authorities and stakeholders to explore measures that could help make accommodation more affordable and accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As student enrolment continues to grow, concerns remain that housing costs in Abraka may continue to rise, making accommodation one of the biggest challenges facing students in the university community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Prosper Onuwaje Students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, have expressed concern over the sharp increase in accommodation costs in communities surrounding the institution, saying the development is placing significant financial pressure on students and their families.
